Ideas for ribs in the oven

For those times when grilling or smoking ribs isn't practical, how do y'all like to cook ribs in the oven? Either baby backs or pork spareribs.

I just don't like them from the oven enough to bother with it. Not the same. Always disappointing, so if someone actually has a way in which they taste great, I'd like to hear it. They're always overcooked in my experience. I'm not a fall off the bone fan for ribs, though. I like them to have a little pull from the bone.

Just do pulled pork. Ribs shouldn't be done in an oven ( and neither should pulled pork, but it's a better fit).

I get the ghetto pork ribs, cut up one yellow onion, one each red and green bell pepper, one jalapeño and half a head of garlic. Put in pan and season generously with salt and pepper, your favorite cajun seasoning and some Jack Millers BBQ sauce. Cover with foil and bake at 270 for 3 hours. I serve over white rice. Cheap and easy meal.

hotel pan, perf pan, water, liquid smoke and seasonings in water, cook overnight at the lowest setting your oven will go.

Baste with sauce and finish under the broiler.

I can't dig up the source right now, nor do I think I could find it.

This recipe for baby back ribs required the usual rub and a slow cooker. What blew my mind is that there is no liquid involved, which went against everything I thought a crock pot needed.

Basically cut the baby backs into portions that will fit in the crock pot. Rub them as you would any other method. Spray (or wipe) the crock pot with oil, place the ribs in and cook on low.

These aren't the traditional 3-2-1 method ribs with smoke rings and all, but it's an alternative when ribs are on sale and easy to make, which is what the OP is looking for.

I tried this once and was honestly surprised as to how good they turned out. But then again, it's pork, right?

Crock pot cooking with no liquid. Who would have thunk?

This has always worked for me on those days:
Preheat oven to 350°. Remove membrane from bottom of ribs. Lay down 2 sheets of foil. Dribble honey, liquid smoke, brown sugar, and Cajun seasoning on each side of ribs. Double wrap in foil. Cook for 2 hours. Remove from foil, baste with sauce if desired, and bake 15 minutes uncovered.

This is similiar to how we did them w/o a pit.... But 325 for 3 hours w only a dry rub. I have several store bought rubs: Dancing Pig, Dreamland, Byrons Butt Rub, a Cajun BBQ Rub, etc... Or you can make your own. I never sauce ribs. That is done at the table because my families desired bbq sauce taste varies greatly (Some like Sweet Baby Rays, some hate sweet sauces - Ima Dreamland guy)

Remove membrane. Dry rub. Double wrap in foil, put in oven bone-down for 2.5-3 hours at 325. I admittedly sometimes do this now....and take to the pit for a finishing sear/char on the outside. You can also achieve this exterior char by removing the ribs when they reach the desired texture, turn on the broiler and crisp them quickly on each side in the oven.

This method (oven) will create the "fall off the bone" ribs that Gris mentioned she didnt like. The bones will pull right out of the ribs. If you like to tug on the meat, might wanna cook shorter timeframe. Feel free to test texture around 2 hours.

Tip: wrap in foil and place directly on top rack.... Put a cookie sheet under the ribs on the bottom rack to catch the fat. If the foil leaks juices, better to be cleanin off the cookie sheet than the bottom of your oven.


To each his own. Yes a pit is best... But oven made ribs can be excellent.

If I'm not smoking them, I almost always at least start them in the oven. Then finish them off on the grill and you get the juiciness of the oven but get a quick char on there as well.

Seen a few other people love it this way as well. Worth a shot if you don't have access to a grill or smoker.

Wrap in double layer of foil. Apply rub and place ribs on top of sliced onion bone side down. I pour in a mixture of cider vinegar, Coke and yellow mustard, then bake at 225 for 2.5 hours then throw on the grill to char them a little or open the foil and broil to get each side a little crispy

Interesting, there is a recipe floating around for brisket done in the slow cooker that is similar, no liquid added. My sister swears by it. May try that today, thanks.

Yup. Made some with Woody's Cook-in Sauce sealed in foil once at the camp when we didn't have a smoker. Came out just fine.

My two go-to's:

1.) Fennel Spice Rub

Take 2tbsp of fennel seeds, lightly toast in a pan. Then grind with a tsp of peppercorns, some coriander, and a little paprika. Then blend in some salt, and adjust spice if you want more kick.

Wrap in foil, cook for ~3hrs at 225.


2.) Mustard Rub

Slather ribs in a high-quality mustard, preferably whole grain options.

Bake as above.

Also, consider smoking in the oven/stovetop with these wood chips designed for such:

You can simply do the chips in the oven as well.

Wife used the crock pot recently. Rubbed ribs, then added BBQ sauce, stacked the racks on top of each other in the crock pot on low for hours (maybe 8). No liquid added.

Took out, added a bit more BBQ sauce and broiled in oven.

They were actually damn good. I was highly skeptical when she started this cook.

I've done ABs oven ribs several times
it ain't BBQ but it's damn good ribs

You can do ribs in pan, add Abita Amber cook about 2 hours in oven covered. Pour off liqud. Saauce ribs and cook another hour. Damn good
