They can be okay, I guess. They use an electric heating element to heat lava rock under your grill grate. They typically don't flare up much if you change the rock bed every year or so. Heat wise, they have a limit. I think 1500 watts is the maximum for a household appliance on a 120 volt circuit. Probably best suited for burgers, chicken breasts, and supermarket steaks. For the coin, I would take a charcoal grill over an electric one any day.

Never used one. but I heard an ATK podcast the other day, and Bridgette said she tried one on vacation and was impressed. She thought it was the Weber Q.

They recommended it to an old lady in an assisted living place that would not allow charcoal or gas grills. She wanted to grill a steak.

I live in a condo on the beach. Only grill we could have was an electric. Bought the Weber Q and it works great. Ribs, chicken, steaks, burgers a did well. Takes some getting used to but if it's all you can have not bad at all. Unfortunately the fire Marshall outlawed them this year and, yeah, it sucks.

For a grill just buy charcoal.

As for why not- if you're buying a gas grill, I assume you don't own a stove?

I have a charcoal grill but I used one at Portofino last week and enjoyed it. cooked burgers and steaks and they both came out great. I just don't know anything about them as I'm not nearly the drillmaster that some of you all are.

My dad has this...

It is very convenient and easy to clean. My mom doesn't like him cooking fish in the house. I would imagine it would pass muster with condos and such. At $65 why not?

ETA: Weber Qs are liquid propane, not electric.

I had at least two Meco brand electric grills when in college/grad school & elec was the only option. They worked surprisingly well for quick-grilled things like shrimp, fish, burgers, boneless chicken. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again should I live in a location with fire/gas/charcoal restrictions. Meco now brands its electric grills as "Easy Street". Easy Street Grills

Have one at my apt complex. It's good for burgers and wings. It doesn't hold the heat once you lift the top up. I would take propane or charcoal anyway over electric.

Why -

To save on cleaning ash
Quickness and ease of use
Best controlling of flame

Why Not -

inferior taste
can't achieve as high of heat as charcoal
can't claim to be an authentic grill master
