How are the $50 brinkmans? Anyone use an electric smoker? Thoughts?

I'm eying up a Master Forge $99 model or their $169 model gas smoker. One of the advantages of electric smokers is if it has a probe, it will shut itself off when it hits your target temperature. Gas you have to tend to as the tanks run out and checking temps.

After years of failing with a Brinkmann, I gave it away and bought a Weber Smoky Mountain. About $299. One of my best purchases.

Head over to the virtual weber bullet site and learn all about them.

I had a Brinkmans for over 7 years and loved it. Loved it so much my husband bought me a fancy Master Forge - don't like it at all. For some reason I cannot get the temp correct (takes awhile to get to temp) and then it seems to be getting hotter rather then leveling off (even though the temp reads what it is set at). Just cannot get the feel for this smoker. My Brinkman I just plugged it in and let it go. Probaby just so used to the Brinkman have not adjusted to the Master Forge but to me the Brinkman was/is easier to use and to clean.

I've smoked on Brinkmans for more than 35 years. If you can cook, you'll be fine.

It's definitely a preference thing with pros and cons. You have a choice between traditional, electric, and electric pellet. Can you be more specific about your needs?

Do yourself a favor and get an Orion Cooker. It's the easiest and smokiest flavor you'll get for under a couple hundred bucks.

Pit Barrel Cooker. Not a traditional smoker, but will get you great smoked meat for under $300 shipped. And it's pretty much idiot proof. I have a couple threads on here about some stuff I've cooked.

Get one of these if you have a gas grill and can control the temp well. They work pretty good.

I never smoked before, looking to get started and I dont want to spend a ton of $$. would prefer not to have to babysit the temp all day, would like to "set it and forget it" and tend to the temp once an hour or so at most.

+1

Pair this with a Maverick remote thermometer and it's about as close to set it and forget it as you will find with charcoal.

Then you want the Pit Barrel. No adding fuel after you light it. No water pan to mess with. No adjustments to make. All you do is watch the clock and check the temp. Couldn't be easier.

I'm about to eat some leftover brisket from Saturday I cooked in it.

I'm happy with my Akorn. The cost is the same as the Weber Smoky Mountain. It holds temps extremely well.
