How do you eat a tossed salad?

I've always been told, cut as you go.
When people cut a salad up, all at once, I feel like I'm holding everyone up being polite.

If you have a salad, and it's tossed, but there's some things in it that are too big to eat in one bite, do you cut them all at once, at first? Or, do you cut them as you eat the salad?

If I'm eating a salad and come across something too big for me to eat in one bite, I cut it as I go.
I don't randomly mix up my salad before eating it searching for food that might need to be cut. That seems kind of like cutting up the entire steak before eating any of it.

I've never had a tossed salad. How is that different from a salad that I mix a little bit with my fork?
