Home-cooked Valentine' meal

The last couple of years I've done the Maxwells Market deal where you buy fillets, lobster, etc. and I cook it at home. The plan is still to cook at home, but I would like to change up the menu. Wife is pregnant, so drinks aren't an issue.
Any suggestions for a nice meal? Any meat or fish is fine, I'd just like to do something besides the surf and turf deal.

I am doing the same thing this year. I am going to do a cedar plank salmon with mashed red potatoes and asparagus. Never done the cedar plank before and I am looking forward to it. Just an idea.

women are pretty paranoid about eating fish while pregnant these days

I know you want to get away from surf and turf. But if you buy a thick cut ribeye and butterfly it, it looks like a heart.
Kinda romantic right?

You cant eat fish when your pregnant? That sucks!
can you eat red meat?

Extremely romantic I'm not dead-set on avoiding steak, so a different presentation and sides could work out.
About preggos and fish (and steak...and everything), yeah the wife wants it cooked way more than I would like cooking it. Cedar plank fish sounds like a good idea

I'd eat it
ETA: And I love roasted garlic potatoes. LINK
You could also deglaze your pan (assuming you are using the stove/oven method) with some red wine, garlic, and mushrooms. Use that as a sauce

Braise some short ribs in wine, tomato paste and stock. Make mashed potatoes with loads of butter, you can even toss in some lobster.
Make it tonight (the braise). Will only improve overnight.
Profit.

What is her favorite thing to eat? Cook that. She will appreciate the thought and effort, esp if you tweak her favorite a bit to give it an upgrade (like a lobster mac n cheese, for example)

Boom goes the dynamite.

why did you have to put that in my head!

Braising is the best option with a pregnant wife and being able to eat meat. Plus the red wine in the sauce is super healthy. Batali's recipe is a good one to follow.

One year, I got my then GF (now wife) a heart shaped pizza from Papa Murphy's and made a heart shaped angel food cake for dessert, complete with pink food coloring and pink colored Cool Whip. She enjoyed that.

Not my proudest moment, but we did enjoy a nice night in. The cake came out better than I thought it would, so that was nice.
ETA: Had to go hunt for a picture of it. I put too much batter in the pan, so the shape of the top of the cake wasn't very heart like, but the bottom was.
And yes, I just had them on paper plates. Hooray college.

I like those short ribs over grits. A good salad and some French bread or Commander's crack garlic bread is a tasty meal. I'd make a light dressing for the salad with some strawberries or other fruit mixed in. This would go well.
2 T balsamic vinegar
1/4 c olive oil
1/4 c canola
4 T sugar or less (I use Splenda)
2 T white wine vinegar
2 t pepper
1 t salt
5 dashes Tabasco
Shake to dissolve sugar. Keeps in the fridge. I double and triple it all the time.
Good with mixed lettuces like romaine and butter lettuce or spring salad mix, sliced strawberries or mandarin oranges, toasted almonds or pecans or praline pecans, crumbled feta (or goat cheese) and red onions. There’s a brand of pecan pie pecans by Diamond or something like that in a green bag that most stores sell in the nut section that works perfectly with this salad mixture.
