Girlfriend and I met after work for an early dinner at Louisiana Lagniappe. We both arrived at 5:30 and had no problem getting a table though I was surprised to see so many people already there and the restaurant more than half full. By 6:30, there was a wait so I recommend dining early.

We started with some drinks. She had a glass of white wine and I had a Pimm's Cup, which I needed after a long day at the office.

We split the eggplant appetizer which was really good. Four large eggplant medallions topped with lump crabmeat and a meunière sauce. The sauce was really good and I put the bread to use. Sensation salads came next, which my girlfriend loved but having had a salad for lunch, I ate about half.

For our entreés, she ordered the Fresh Fish en Papillote, which was stellar as always and I ordered the Cocodrie, which was sautéed black drum topped with four large soft shell crawfish and bearnaise sauce. Pretty delicious and rich meal. Only complaint is the very odd side of the twice-baked potato. It's good, but I wish there were some other options like different veggies or grains. Also, Black Drum being the "fish of the day" is annoying as it's the fish of the day in every restaurant. It was a very good piece of fish, but as someone who fishes and has eaten his share of drum, it doesn't do much for me.

We were out the door at 7:00. The service was excellent and so was the pacing of the meal.

Did you sit at a table for an hour before deciding to actually eat?

No. It was just a well paced meal.

We sat down around 5:30. Ordered drinks.

Drinks arrived and we ordered an appetizer. We finished the appetizer before ordering the entreés. Enjoyed pleasant conversation.

Salads came and they gave us plenty of time to eat those.

Then entreés came.

We probably didn't get our entreés until about 6:10/6:20?

It wasn't a meal we were rushing through, but we didn't just sit around at the table without food or drinks.

Mea culpa on this one. I read that as "recommended" dining early (as a recommendation to your partner that you should start dining at that point) rather than "recommend" (as in, to the general public for future awareness).

You clearly typed "recommend."

Ah, no problem.

LA Lagniappe is one of the few places that doesn't take reservations and it's popular all the time. I'm not a fan of waiting for over an hour to eat somewhere.

It wasn't so much long in terms of hours but it was a particularly mentally stressing day.

The fish en papillote is one of my favorite meals ever. Delicious.

Its because its the cheapest fresh fish offering from the majority of the seafood purveyors who service the restaurants in the area. There's very little waste and its rather mild and versatile fish.
He's making as much as possible on that dish which i'd be willing to bet he charged ~$26.95 for.

This type of shite is one of the many reasons why i don't like LA Lagniappe. Twice Stuffed BP is not "odd", its lazy. No telling how old that thing was either.

in my opinion, they just have some tired arse, overpriced dishes on their menu. case in point, Eggplant with JLC.

I've been once and it did feel like the place and menu was kind of boring.

I'm usually not a fan of protein on protein, but I could deal with this in a heartbeat. I still probably wouldn't mix them in one bite though.

Actually the cheapest would be salmon. Black drum has gone up in price recently. Restaurants use is because it's also easy to clean and easy to get. There's also more waste than you think.

Those tired arse, overpriced dishes sell very well. They are meeting the demand of their clientele. That's what the business is about. BR isn't a very progressive town when it comes to food. It has come a long way but still very much behind the times.

That eggplant app was pretty damn delicious though so while it may be tired, they executed it well

When in doubt assume the catch of the day is Black Drum. Black Drum is almost always the fish of the day at Roberto's as well. Redfish is usually reserved for daily specials.

I only ate a few bites together, but the fish and softshell crawish were good enough to stand on their own. Especially the crawfish. Wish you could order a platter of those.

I just got my birthday email from them, so the wife and I will be going there in the next few weeks.

I've never had a problem with their food, and always enjoyed myself.

Anyone know if they let you bring your own wine, or charge a corking fee? I could google I guess....

I'd probably call them, though with them having a full bar and wine list, I doubt it.

There's a place in town, BSL, that sells them stuffed and fried, they're $15 for 5...but don't look that good. Those look to be the jumbos.

The place here buys a dozen for $13 from the place that produces them.

You are right. Its been a while since I've placed seafood or produce orders. But, you are correct, farm salmon was always the cheapest.

Its kind of relative really. compared to whole skin on salmon sides, yes. but compared to fresh Tuna loins, no. typically one would just be cutting the belly off (1oz) and tapering the tail (1/2 oz) to get it plate ready.

I get it and am not knocking the "business" sense it makes. Hell, same could be said about McDonald's or Mike Anderson's.

I do agree with you that BR has come a LONG way in terms of its culinary offerings and creativity.

For the longest time, BR was just a fried seafood town. Mike Anderson's, Ralph & Kacoo's, etc. But to your point, that is all the market was. Throw in ONE, high end steak house (Ruth's), a Mexican restaurant (Superior), an Italian (The Village/Gino's) and you pretty much had all the market demands covered.

BR patrons were very fickle about trying new things. I guess I'm just hoping the days of menieure & hollandaise sauces on everything are coming to an end.
