My friends and I were discussing this topic today, what is the actual liquid in a gumbo called? My friends were saying all the liquid is called a roux but that's just what you start with. We couldn't come up with the best word to describe it and was wondering if there is even a term other than "gumbo" to describe.

It's called Gumbo but only if it has okra cooked in it. Without okra it's stew.

Wrong. Okra gumbo vs File' Gumbo. One uses okra as the thickening agent while the other uses file'. Both are gumbos.

Then it technically isn't Gumbo no matter what mee-maw called it, it's stew.

Stew is thicker than Gumbo. U dont need okra in gumbo to call it gumbo.
