Gruene/New Braunfels recommendations
Posted by NickyT on 12/9/15 at 12:40 pm00
Besides for the chicken fried steak at Gristmill, where else should I go this weekend?
the BBQ purists will scoff, but i love rudy's
there's one on the 337 loop
creamed corn!
in gruene i like cantina del rio
not a big fan of the gristmill, it never has done anything for me but the food is decent i guess
gruene river grill is also pretty good

People who dog Rudy's are people who are just philosophically opposed to chains. Rudy's was a customer of mine. I know what grade of beef they buy and I am intimately familiar with their processes. I would also venture to say I've eaten at more than 10 of their stores and it's very consistent and I've never had a sub-par meal at one. Is it Franklin's? No. Do they make damn fine BBQ on a consistent basis? Yes. Yes they do. Moist Brisket and Turkey FTW!

i am philosophically opposed to chains, and i will usually skip the meaL before i waste a meal at a chain...having said that, i'll go out of my way when i am in texas to eat at rudy's
hits me right in the sweet spot every time
Rudy's is excellent for what it is, though I did eat at one in Plano that wasn't that good. All the ones I've eaten at in Austin are awesome.
You could venture out to Lockhart (40 minutes away) and try all the good places there for BBQ.

Gristmill is great, huge menu so dont listen to the haters. lived down there for 5 years and the menu is 4 pages long. ive met people who didnt think it was great and they got a burger or something and thats it.
Gruene River Grill is fantastic as well.
we love going to the grapevine next to the general store and having some wine and then going to eat
rudys is good but SOOOO many better options, including Coopers
there is a terrific place downtown called Huisache Grill. its fantastic, its a rustic wine bar with great food and live music. check it out
also, clear springs has great fried catfish and HUGE onion rings
also you cant go wrong with new braunfels smokehouse, its been there forever and has some great local german smoked meats and bbq
love that area and city, looking at land outside of NB to buy

Was friends with the Ford family when I was in Texas and was around when Rudy's started. For chain BBQ it's as good as you can get with good consistency between locations. I haven't been in a while, but I am a BBQ snob and I have no problems with Rudy's.

best hidden gem in that area, however FYI its closed for the winter and will reopen for concerts in April
we floated the river for the day, ate dinner and saw pat green and eli young there 2 years ago. i remember sitting there looking out at the river and the hill country drinking a shiner, thinking "it doesnt get much better than this."
gruene hall is great too. damn i miss that area. now im looking at taking the wife soon for a weekend!

Coopers is too pricey IMO. Last time I went to the one in Llano it was my wife, 7 year old son, and me and I spent $70 for lunch.
