Going for the first time tonight for my birthday. What should I get?

Start with the Lawrence bread and arincini. Go with the veal chop or the veal sorrentina for your entree. Finish up with cheesecake.

Everyone, including your server, will try to sell you on the Lawrence bread. It's fine, but not worth how much it will fill you up, in my opinion. I'd prefer go double on the arancini.

Start with a seafood arancini
Gino salad
Seafood cannelloni
Veal piccata
Almond cake and ask them to drizzle the Italian amaretto on it

It is meant to compliment your meal, not fill you up, politceaux's recommendation is spot on, other great items are Gino's or mamas salad, crabmeat and angel hair, grilled seafood

Forget if the Seafood Arancini comes with the "pinkish sauce" automatically, or if needs requesting, but request it if not.
It is just cream sauce added to marinara that accompanies the Meat and Pea regular Arancini, but works well with the Seafood.
Geauxld is spot-on, as their seafood cannelloni and veal piccata are great. As is the angel hair and crab rec(Joey Distefano used to also master this recipe with Mrs Fannie's Village recipes). And that almond cake is from a lady in Covington according to Laurence, but it's fabulous.

It's good, not great, so just enjoy it for what it is.

I lol'ed at this. It's the best Italian in BR for sure, and one of my favorite places when I'm in town. The filet a'la Laurence, veal sorrentina, veal chop, lasagna, arancine, meatball subs (might be off menu), pizza, fish, actually everything I've had there is good, which is most of the menu.

I think it's a reasonable point of contention, but Nino's might take umbrage with your "for sure" designation.

That's a place that I never got all the hype over. Maybe I just had mediocre dinners when I went a few years back, but I was never blown away by anything. It was good, but was too expensive for what was delivered and expected.

There's your problem, Shagman. The food that Elton is putting out now is about the best that Baton Rouge has to offer.
You should give it another go when you are in town.

Have had good meals there, but the last two times we went, we left disappointed both times. The last time we went, I felt like they stole my money it was so average.

While they're both Italian restaurants, I don't find them comparable.

I disagree. It's very good. I especially enjoy the arancine, the veal parmigiana, and all the desserts.
Beats any Italian here in Austin.

Their veal Parmesan is covered with the best cheese, this side of the Mississippi

Completely agree. Ninos isn't a "red sauce joint". Both are great in different ways.
I'm a Gino's fan, but I also really love Diguilios when it comes to that style. That seafood arancine at Gino's though....
