I cleaned out me beds in the brutal heat of the last few weeks. Now I'm motivated to plant a fall garden. What to plant and when? I don't have good luck with fall tomatoes. I left my peppers in cuz they are producing great.

I've planted beets, carrots and arugula before so I'll do those but when to plant? What else works well?

I plant mid to late September.

I'll plant carrots, radishes, arugula, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower and swiss chard.

Ive had success with broccoli--plant around Labor Day. grows a big head blossom initially and after harvested will continue to have shooters pop off.

Assuming your somewhere in south Louisiana this has been my go to for planting information for 30 years.

LSU vegetable planting guide

Planted some cantaloupe 2 weeks ago. Something I have never planted before.

Cabbage, beets and cabbage are a few of my regulars for this time of year.

Forgive my ignorance, I'm a gardening newb. I tried planting a few things in the spring and did horribly, so I'm looking to redeem myself this fall. I think I'm going to try smaller stuff like herbs and spices. Maybe some potatoes too.

When yall plant do y'all usually plant with seed or with a small plant? Also, is soil type/brand extremely important?

I planted pumpkins back on July 4th. That's the date needed to have pumpkins for Halloween.
Broccoli, cabbage, turnips, greens, and carrots will go down after rice and soybean harvest.

My Thai peppers are producing like mad. 12 plants in containers = 20 peppers a day. And there is still new flowering. So, I'm pretty sure that they will produce until Oct. No fall garden needed.

Transplanted collard greens mid Aug last summer and picked leaves from Oct until early March. Plants got over 4' tall so I had to stake them. We really like collard greens.

Lettuce, Cabbage, Chard, Kale, Carrots, Brussels Sprouts, Parsley....I have nursed a couple of tomato plants through the summer and if we don't have an early freeze, I should get a second crop. I harvested 15-20 tomatoes between christmas and New Years last year.....and a big crop of jalapenos. But that is unusual, we usually get a freeze in November that kills them.
