I've heard about this as a method for cooling the crawfish after a rolling boil...is this safe? Please pardon my ignorance.

I've done this for years, frozen milk jugs and two liters, thrown in with the frozen corn in the soak period to shock cool the crawfish. A lot of people I know dump ice in, but to me that dilutes the boil if you are using the water again. The water below boil won't hurt the two liters or jugs at all, not sure what the first responder's comment is about.

I don't know. Go ahead and toss some plastic jugs in a pot of hot water.

Sounds like a great idea.

I have done it a few times, works great. Not a problem at all.

Not needed for crawfish, I don't like it for shrimp and choose to lower the water temp in other ways .

I cant comment on the boil worthiness of a two liter, however if you go to a restaurant supply store, they sell these things that look like large plungers. You fill it with water, freeze it, and then can drop it into soups or a crawfish boil, where it will help quickly chill the dish.

Granted, I havent seen one in person since I worked in a kitchen in Crested Butte about 15 years ago, but I recall Bevi Seafood using them.

BO, I was going to say that. They're called "cooling paddles". Here are some pics:

With these, you can be sure the plastic is safe for hot food.

It probably gets hotter in your dishwasher. Do you not put any plastic in your dishwasher?

Considering the plastic used in most bottles doesn't begin to melt until ~480ºF, boiling water at 212ºF will do nothing to the bottle.

Its how I cool my crawfish without adding ice/water. In my deep freeze lies 6 frozen Mott Apple Juice Gallon Jugs w Handles.... (Sans the box tops we already used at school)

I thpically use 2 per sack W corn usually. Frozen corn cools crawfish water a minimal amount, contrary to an ubelieveable popular belief about their corn cooling bugs enough for a long soak.

I like to use water bottles not because of diluting the boil water, but if I do several sacks I end up with too much water in the pot from adding all the ice after each sack

I wouldn't be too sure. It doesn't have to melt to release dangerous chemicals into the water.
