what does that have to do with having tomatos in their gumbo? They gave me a bowl and I didn't know wtf it was until they told me it was gumbo.

Pretty sure you might be thinking of either Franky and Johnny's or Casamento's. I have been going to Domilise's for around 38 years and I have never seen gumbo there. They serve po-boys chips and drinks.

Figured I would get a link.

It is a myth that everyone in New Orleans uses tomatoes in their gumbo. I have never seen one of my family members use tomatoes in their gumbo and I have a very large family. I just have never seen anyone I know around New Orleans put tomatoes in their gumbo either.

Now at the restaurants around New Orleans maybe so.

My buddy lives about a block away and hangs out there pretty regular, they had just cooked it that day for employees and regulars...it wasn't on the menu.

Probably because they built an interstate from Lafayette to New Orleans.

Since then more people in NOLA have learned to cook gumbo.

Four things that really suck at restaurants in New Orleans outside of like K-Pauls and Couchon.

Gumbo
Jambalaya
Boudin
Etouffee

Think that is a Baton Rouge myth.

Nah, it definitely is based in truth. As cultures have blended lots on NOLA places have seen the light and went to a cajun style of gumbo, but places like Casamento's still serve an awful tomato heavy gumbo.

Maybe so. My grandma & grandpa are about 90 years old and that is where I learned from and no tomatoes in there gumbo.

Yes they do. So does Franky and Johnny's. Both owned by Italians.

That is possible. Same answer to Catman's post, owned by Italians.

I think i am fundamentally opposed to boudin at any restaurant much above a gas station or quick stop type place.

hell, i can't even order jambalaya in a restaurant and only crawfish as last resort and having a boil is not possible. Crawfish to go and eating them outside is the way to go in that case.

Dude, they make it in house with really good products. They only serve it in fried ball form.
You would like it.

eh, much prefer regular boudin. I don't need a little cute dipping sauce and batter for good boudin.

I'm sure it's tasty, but it just feels wrong and unneccessary.

For me even boudin balls feel at home drunk at 11am when tailgating....not at a sit down restaurant.
