first was a pizza from the mobile stone oven at the farmers market called dats Italian. Brussels sprouts, garlic, caramelized onions and panchetta. Perfectly cooked on a really fine crust. Good stuff and they say they are opening a place in the BR govt st market thing

for dinner we tried th steak place for the first time since it moved. really nice space and great service. We had fried green beans, salads, soft shell crab over pasta and a filet with broccoli. first class eats

Hammond is light years better for dining then when I moved here after katrina

They have that new Vietnamese place that moved into the steak house's old location. And the Pho place by Hobby Lobby, which was opened by Super King family.

the place by hobby lobby is excellent although the menu is necessarily dumbed down.
in addition to the pho place downtown there's a new Cuban place owned by tacos and beer people we need to try

Mojitos also does breakfast. Though I think it doesn't open until 9.

Brings back fond memories of Bogdan Mocanu and his BR pizza truck, then Dolce Vita down in NOLA. Hope he is doing well with whatever he's up to these days.

I think people under rate how nice downtown Hammond is and selu is getting a lot of updates that make it a really nice campus. I went tailgating Saturday on campus and it was a very enjoyable experience especially with two 5 month olds.

The dining scene in Hammond is rated spot on. Very disappointing. I'm glad it's trying to get better. Red white and Brew is a great place, blackened Brew is a joke

I've had their pizza and it is really good. I remember the guy sweating profusely and thinking "I hope he doesn't drip all over my food".

Wrong. Hammond dining scene is spectacular for a town the size it is, and frankly for the type of people that eat there. The primary customers are college kids and rednecks from the surrounding little towns. Neither one is demanding the type of innovative cuisine that you would find in NOLA or one of the big food cities, but Hammond has many places that do what they do really well.

I would put the top places from Hammond (Kirin and/or Cate Street Sushi, the Steakhouse, Jacmel, Tope La, Brady's, Your Mom's) up against some of the top places from other towns in the state, and I bet Hammond's restaurants hold their own.

I'm jealous they got a new Pho place and a Cuban place. Santiago's wasn't very good, but at least it tried to bring something unique.

I'm not wrong. There are very few places that hold a candle to even BR much less Nola. When Olive Garden and Sante Fe make the most $$ you're in trouble

I lived in Hammond and Baton Rouge, and while Baton Rouge may have more places, and does have better high end places than Hammond, Hammond blows away Baton Rouge on both the quality:quantity ratio and restaurants:people ratio.

Saying it can't hold a candle to NOLA isn't even an app comparison, as about 99% of the places in the US can.

Comparing Hammond/Baton Rouge/New Orleans from a dining perspective will never be apples to apples. They are three very different types of places.

I agree though that Hammond is mostly catering to smaller town people and college kids and does a solid job in their offerings.
