Whataburger limits breakfast menu
bird flu causes egg shortage
quote:
Whataburger is informing its loyal customers it will limit the hours in which it will serve breakfast due to a national egg shortage. Starting today, June 1, 2015, all Whataburger restaurants will serve breakfast items from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays and from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. on weekends so the restaurants can concentrate the limited supply during peak breakfast hours, while supplies last.

As a virulent avian influenza outbreak continues to spread across the Midwestern United States, some egg-dependent companies are contemplating drastic steps - importing eggs from overseas or looking to egg alternatives.
A spokeswoman for Archer Daniels Midland Co said that as egg supplies tighten and prices rise, the food processing and commodities company has received numerous inquiries from manufacturers about the plant-based egg substitutes it makes.

Corporate profits must be short this month so government had to release this bird flu.

All the more reason to raise a few
Chickens or find someone local that does. I have three that I buy from and they are much richer and better anyway.

My next door neighbor keeps us supplied too. We haven't bought an egg in 11 years.

The United States is grappling with its biggest outbreak of bird flu on record, which has led to the culling of 40 million birds
Seems like something that the US should be able to recover from in a decent amount of time. According to AEB, flock size was 303 million egg-laying hens on April 1,2015.
quote:
Presently, there are approximately 63 egg producing companies with 1 million-plus hens that represents approximately 87 percent of total production and 17 companies with greater than 5 million hens
I guess it depends on where these 40 million birds are coming from. A company wiping out a whole flock from these guys would be pretty serious for them to make a speedy recovery.

I was talking to a guy who deals with environmental clean up stuff and he's hiring a crew of 200 guys to go to Iowa and clean up one of these companies. He said they had 5.7 million chickens that they had to kill. He wasn't quite sure how they were going to kill them

The elderly lady across the road from me has chickens. She doesn't eat the eggs, just likes having chickens. I get around a dozen a week from her 3 hens.

I've got a lady by my farm, a lady down the street from my home, both sell yard eggs for $2.00 dozen and a good friend on route to kids school who gives them to me. We go through 2 dozen a week and very seldom do I buy store eggs anymore. When I do I buy the big jumbos which about two out of a dozen are double yolks.
I was going to do chickens and I still might but now I have a consistent source I might do something else.

If you have kids, I'd highly recommend it. My kids love our hens and it's nice teaching them the responsibility of them.

I once bought eggs from a neighbor who has chickens. I'm not a fan of those dark yokes, but my family is. One morning I cracked open a couple of eggs to make scrambled eggs, and I saw a big embryo in the yolk. I no longer buy country eggs but on eggs bought in a chain grocery store. The eggs in the grocery stores are not raised with hens who have roosters.

I grew up with 7 domino hens, and loved them. Treated them like pets.
And I was the one who fed them and collected the eggs. Got a kick out of it as a kid.

Wife has a client that gives us eggs.
The lighter shells are delicate. They crack easily. Darker shells are a little tougher.
I refer to Jones with any questions I might have about eggs, or poultry, as he's the expert.

Meh...boneless chicken.
They have a much richer taste and make kick arse pasta. I like farm raised cackle fruit.

Went to Jason's Deli for lunch. Salad bar had a notice that no boiled eggs were available due to shortage.
