We've been vacationing on 30A forever, but we're thinking really hard about moving east of Panama City because 30A has gotten so crowded. Does anybody have any info/recommendations on the Windmark Beach/Port St. Joe/Cape San Blas areas?

I know this is not food related, but I trust this board's opinion more than the OT's. TIA

I have a friend who has a summer house at Carabelle Beach. They absolutely love it. Food scene isn't as good as 30A, but Apalachicola has some quality restaurants. More of an "old florida' feel than the more updated food scene on 30A.

Do you drive an SUV with a 30A sticker on the back of it?? I think I might have seen you around.

nope. We've been vacationing on 30A for over 20 years. We are now trying to get away from all the folks with the 30A stickers. 30A has changed dramatically over the last decade.

what's the water like over in Carabelle? I've still got kids who like to play in the ocean...

All good. I also know the fishing is really good down there. My buddy goes out to an island in his boat and they do a lot of snorkeling and shelling there. You've also got both Dog Island and St. George Island.

I've been trying to talk my family into going down further that way, but everyone protests at the added couple of hours of drivetime.

We have a huge group that we take, so I've been pushing for this rental:

big time.. we've changed the times we go down there to late summer to avoid the crowds but even that is starting to not work anymore.

we're thinking more and more about moving the beach vaca spot to east of PCB as well. Have some friends that go to Port St Joe every year and love it.

We are in the same boat. It's too bad because 30A was great back in the day. My only concerns about east of PCB is that places like Windmark/Port St. Joe are on a bay (brackish water/no waves). Cape San Blas looks like the best option because its on the gulf and the bay. I don't really care about the dining options - I just want peace and quiet.

Yeah. 30A has just become nuts. We started going there when Destin got too crowded and crazy for us. We've lucked into a house that has a back access to get onto 395, so we can drive up to Publix without having to actually get on 30A (which, with 18 people we seem to have to do several times a day).

I'd really like to get further down away from the crowds and into better fishing, though.

Cape San Blas is very peaceful and quiet, with not much going on. The bay is fun for snorkling or looking for scallops (depending on the season), and the beach isn't that crowded. Usually lots of shells to be found. Not much of anyplace to eat or get groceries unless you drive to Port St. Joe or Apalachicola.

St. George Island is nice also with a few more dining options, but it's a bit farther.

The 30A sticker has ruined it!

We loved it for 11 years and I can see the changes. George and Ann sold George's to some restaurant family in Memphis.

I am serious. I was invited to stay in WaterColor during Easter break. I saw a couple people that were wait staff at George's for a long time working at other restaurants. I didn't ask them why they left, but maybe because the Hartley's sold it.

The article is in the recent Alys Gazette. It's titled New Family, Same Vision. The article says The Hartley's-who also owned nearby La Cocina Mexican Bar and Grill and currently own the Seagrove Market Grill.

It's not on the coast but check out Wakulla Springs. It is old school Florida. My great grandparents would take us over there from their hometown of Perry, FL every summer for several days when I was a kid.

I've been going to Mexico Beach for a week in June every summer the past 5 years and we love it. It's not quite as pretty as Destin beaches but not crowded at all. We stay in one of the largest houses on the beach. Thing it lacks is a good grocery and restaurants. But we usually cook fish ourselves and we run 20 min up the road to piggy wiggly in port st joe.

Best food in Mexico beach is Killer Seafood and their fish tacos. But they are cash only. Their hot sauce is what dreams are made of. I buy a few bottles and bring home.

I don't think the water is as blue/green and the sand isn't as white as the Destin area. More wildlife in the water too.

In the late 60's we started at Pensacola Beach, then Fort Walton for years and gradually got chased East by Snooky and The Situation until landing in Sea Grove in 1993. We have been staying at Watercolor the last 8 or so years because we have several friends who own homes there but now we just go at Thanksgiving which I much prefer. For the Summer I too am looking farther East although my enthusiasm for the beach is waining. I'm preferring going North as I get older.

We go to Destin, what's the problem? Destin Gulfgate is nice and not a crowded beach while it's central to everything.
