I'm headed for a quick weekend trip to downtown Atlanta. Any recs on a decent restaurant or favorite bar that shouldn't be missed?

Westside Provisions has some good restaurants and bars and not far from downtown:
- JCT Kitchen: Southern farm-to-table and great outdoor bar
- Bacchanalia: Probably too fancy but couldn't omit
- Little Trouble: Cool bar that feels like you're in the movie Blade Runner
- Ormsby's: Fun bar with games (shuffleboard, darts, bocce ball)
- Star Provisions: Gourmet deli
You can then walk to Northside Tavern, which is a great dive bar with live blues.
Antico Pizza is within walking distance from Westside as well and many argue it's the best in the city.

One of my favorite hangouts is Ladybird on the beltline. It's camping themed restaurant/bar/brunch spot. Great to chill outside and people watch on the beltline. You can also get to plenty of other cool spots on the beltline from there by foot or bike (rentals next door). If you do this, you can hit up any of the following:
- Krog Street Market: Complex with several vendors, beer bar, and full service restaurants. Superica is fantastic Mexican food and The Merchant for oysters/
- Inman Park: Neighborhood with several restaurants, many of which are new. Also King of Pops HQ is there and an ATL tradition.
- Ponce City Market: A bit further down the beltline but new and popular with the yuppie crowd. Old factory turned into mixed-use space. Plenty of good grub to try.

Disgustingly wonderful or wonderfully disgusting food.
Good milk shakes, fries and frosted orange
Atlanta landmark/tradition/icon.

Know the Carse boys. Still shocked and pleased how well that concept has done.

Good stuff, also just opened a new barcelona wine bar over there. It's a small chain but good spot.
As everyone's posts suggest, you'll need to venture out of downtown to get into the better offerings of Atlanta.

You won't get better ATL recs than some of the ones already posted here.
If you are interested in beer: Brickstore Pub, The Porter, Cypress St, Wrecking Bar.

Food is marginal, at best. I would compare it to food from dairy queen. And, don't get me wrong... I eat at dairy queen from time to time. But I wouldn't travel to a different city with hundreds or thousands of restaurants, and I only get to choose a few for a short trip, and choose to go to dairy queen.
It is an "Atlanta tradition" cause it has been there forever. And a lot of people still go there, cause it reminds them of going there when they were kids.
They have an orange drink, that is pretty tasty. But you know what else is tasty? Blizzards from dairy queen. But, again, I wouldn't make it one of my only spots to eat in a city the size of Atlanta, just to say that you've been to the varsity.
And, inevitably, someone will say "oh, you have to go to the varsity" or if you don't go, they'll say "oh, what?? you didn't go the varsity??" I promise, you're not missing much. It is a cultural icon of sorts.
For actual recommendations, it's sort of like choosing a place to eat in new orleans, it depends on where you are locationally, how much you want to spend, and what kind of food you want.
I haven't been there since college, but for me, a couple of personal favorites were La Fonda Latina (it's a local chain, but delicious IMO), or the Vortex for a wicked awesome burger. I was broke in college, so I don't know any of the fine dining options.
But I have been to the Varsity. I wasn't mad at the quality of the food, I was just mad that I wasted one of only a few meals that I had there.

Bocado burger is 100x better than vortex

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I now have 6 meals and 37 choices, all of which I sure will be a hit.
As for the varsity, maybe we will walk through and get a milk shake so we can say we visited.
I will definitely be stopping by a few of those bars after visiting the Aquarium.

La Grotta. Very good Italian restaurant in Buckhead.

Milkshakes aren't that great. The pc(plain chocolate)is the best drink choice at the varsity
