85 year old dad wants to take the family to Don's as he members the one on Airline and loved going in the 70's. I am not sure about how good it is now as I have only had raw oysters there. Any recommendations as to what is good there to order?

They have a good crawfish bisque and gumbo.

I have enjoyed their chicken ravioli dish at lunch a few times. I know it is crazy to order chicken ravioli at a seafood joint, but someone with me got it one day and intrigued me. I had fried fish and shrimp the night before and was looking for a change of pace.

I've ordered the chicken ravioli the last three times at the Covington location.

It is pretty bad food.

Should consider tricking the ole paw and telling him that Parrains is run by the old Dons people.

Dude, you just don't understand the nostalgia and memories "Old People" have for Don's. The food is pretty typical of other average seafood places around BR.

Ha! He likes Parrains as well. However, anyone with an elderly parent understands that they are NOT easily swayed and often times "nostalgia" plays a part in the decision.

Yeah it is just one meal and you still got your dad at 85. That is what counts the most I reckon.

But yeah avoid the gumbo. Think they make it with sewer water.

I haven't been in years, but I imagine fried seafood is hard to totally screw up.

I'd probably get some fried shrimp or oysters.

Their appetizer "jacked up shrimp" is pretty damn good. Anytime I go there I usually get shrimp étouffée, it's good, nothing super special though.

Eta: the biggest BS is that they don't give free hush puppies anymore.

Crawfish bisque

Broiled flounder is hit n miss but on the good days it is the best thing on the menu

And yet they have crawfish bisque that is 1000000x better than Mike Andersons. I would choose crawfish bisque out of a can from a random place in Utah before I would ever eat the crap that they serve at MA's again.

They make a damn good Old Fashion.
We went there a few years ago during Lent and got raw oysters and fried stuff. It was OK. The place is just kind of worn out.

I defended Mike Andersons for a long time, even after people started thrashing them. But the prices went up and the food just isn't good anymore.

We still use their cookbook though for some stuff, and I think their fish fry is great.

Never had Don's bisque, I don't order gumbo or bisque places because they can't make it as well as I can.

I love Old Fashions - mom's drink of choice and used to get the orange and cherry from her drink as a kid - no wonder I love whisky!

If this is the same Don's I'm thinking of, get the cheesecake. Best I've ever had anywhere, and I've had them everywhere.
