If I have a waitress ask as I am paying my check if I want a drink in disposable cup I will almost always say no. However, if I go to a self service place I walk back to the machine and leave with a full cup almost every time. I cannot understand myself

Depends on how many refills I've had throughout the meal.

I usually have a beer, but just last night at Demos' my daughter got a sweet tea so I ask for one to go for her and had it myself. That sugar water though!

Like you say, only if I am at a self serve fast food type place and particularly if I'm in a position where I won't have easy access to anything else to drink for a while and it's really hot outside.

The thing to remember is that places like that charge the most insane profit mark-up on sodas, WAY more than any other type of food sold. The cup, straw and lid cost like 100 times more than what's actually going into the cup.

I just order a beer and ask for an empty cup "for my water".

I do the same...mainly because if I am eating somewhere with a self service machine, I have eaten fries and am thirsty from the salt.

Worked in a fancy restaurant and had a lot of really rich people ask for alcoholic drinks to go. Used to make me nervous as hell, but they would tip really well
