I've got a few. Might end up just boiling some shrimp. Preciate it though

Drive up for non-existent product? If seafood markets can't get any, then what are they going to mark up?

I was under the impression that it wasn't about population number and more about individual crab size.

Select LA Blue crabs sell for I want to say something around $4-6 a piece in New England.

It's not gonna last until Easter. I was under the impression that it was a month long closed season.

Why did they choose this month? Something about the lifecycle?

How is a 30 day ban going to do anything?

The article makes it sound like it's actually longer due to the logistics of having all nets up by the day of the ban and the time it will take to put them all back out.

How the hell do they know how many crabs are out there?

They don't

FYI you can still go crabbing yourself as long as you don't use traps

Who is actually eating crabs at the beginning of March? They aren't running much and they aren't full. Eat shrimp and crawfish. July 4 eat crabs when they are big, fat and full.

I've been catching some nice ones off the dock lately. They've all been redfish bait though

This should help the crawfish farmers get top dollar for their catch.

Friend of mine went to Abbeville yesterday to buy a bunch of crabmeat to sell. All from Columbia.

It's a bunch of BS. They're making all these guys pull all their traps out of the water for a whole month. They say its for the smaller crabs to grow but its really these sports fishing assholes who are behind it.

It will be a little longer than a month but these guys will get to fishing really quickly. I suspect our terrible derelict trap problem could be behind this somewhat and getting them out of the water for a little while could help with it. Traps out of the water might get the attention they deserve instead of letting them go until they abosuletly need to be repaired. Ropes rot and break and tons of crabs die in a trap that will never be pulled.

Bottom line is the LA commercial fisherman is getting squeezed in all other kinds of fisheries and the fishermen have really put the pressure on crabs. The number of traps in the water everywhere is beyond comprehension and something needs to be done to reduce the pressure because it is currently unsustainable. It's human nature to want to make as much money for your family as possible so fishermen will never be able police themselves.

25 years ago if you were running 200 traps a week.... 100 M-W-F and a different 100 T-T-S you were a big dog. Now there's guy with a 21' Carolina Skiff and a rake running 200-250 a day. With more crabbers on the water and less marsh/breeding grounds.

This closure been a long time coming.

That's what I've heard this was all about.
