Whats this crap about? Saw this on the news last night but they really didnt go into much detail or a time line. Basically just said there is a Crab ban in place to allow the population to rebuild. Is this just in a certain area or state wide? Hell of a time to bad a particular seafood on the day Lent starts.

It's pretty self explanatory. Gotta build the population back up otherwise, no crab ever.

It's a 30 day ban to help the population build back up. How is that vague at all?

month-long ban on commercial crabbing in Louisiana waters.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission voted in 2016 to enact the moratorium. A 30-day closure, starting on the third Monday in February, also will be in effect in 2018 and 2019.

A Department of Wildlife and Fisheries crustacean biologist told the commission that Louisiana's crab harvest was too high and the ban was needed to protect the fishery.

The crabbers are bitching about the government getting involved. I'm sympathetic, but if we left game and fish harvest unregulated, Louisiana folks would have wiped out ducks and many species of fish by now.

It's simple, fisherman overharvested crabs till the crab population nearly collapsed, the temporary hold allows the population to stabilize and build back up. You should be pissed at fisherman, not the state.

It isn't!

I always thought it was such a funny thing to give up meat in states like Louisiana, especially during prime crawfish season.

It's early for crabs anyway so this is a good time.

However they need to revisit the 5 redfish limit because they are fully recovered and eat a ton of crabs.

Balance.

Thanks for the clarification. The news wasnt very informative and to me made it seam this was an overreach. They never mentioned a 30 hold.

I'd say 8 over 14" and 1 over 27", though why anyone would want to keep a redfish over 27" is beyond me. It's nearly inedible and is part of the breeding stock.

Crabs are very resilient species. They bounce back very quickly from low population levels when protected.

That's the bizarre part, crabs reproduce in July/August, however, it's already illegal to keep females with eggs during that time. IMO it may have made sense to close it down in July and re-open in August.
