My wife is pregnant and just read that pregnant women should eat more fish. So her dad gave her 15 lbs of mahi mahi that he caught. Im wondering about different ways to cook it.

Tonight, I baked it with many seasonings, and mainly used emerils blackened seasoning. It came out great.

I have another idea with Asian style flavors with a sesame seed crust. My wife also wants to make fish tacos with it. Do you guys have any other things I could do with it? They are small filets, 2x3 inches or so. Thanks for the help.

its good just about any way you do it. my favorite fish. when i deckhanded and captained offshore, that was usually the only fish i would keep for myself.

my favorite way to cook was battered in the lemon zatarain fish fry. hot oil in a cast iron skillet. delicious hot and cold. sure you can do it fancier ways than that, but that was my favorite.

make sure she stays away from some fish that are high on the food chain (possibly big dolphin) like shark, swordfish, mackerel, and tuna. they can have high mercury. chicken dolphin should be fine. BUT CHECK WITH YOUR DOC. i've heard it said pregnant women should not have more than a pound of fish per week while pregnant. Prett sure the FDA recently came out saying you should limit any fish intake during pregnancy

I'll second the fish tacos. Hot iron skillet. Drizzle olive oil in the skillet. Season filets with some Tony's and cavenders. When you flip the filets in the skillet throw some corn tortillas on the grill. Flip the tortillas after a couple minutes. Top the filets with plain Greek yogurt, cilantro, peach habanero salsa from whole foods, and drizzle a little citrus vinagerette. Pure heaven and fairly healthy

Cut up some tomatoes, red onion, garlic and maybe a little basil if you have it. Put it in a bowl and toss with lemon juice and olive oil.

salt and pepper fish. Place fish on a rectangular sheet of parchment paper. Top with the above mixture. Fold over parchment paper and crimp at the edge continuously to form a sealed packet.

Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 15-20 minutes depending on how thick it is. Enjoy.

Oh and don't forget to talk to your baby and play good tunes for it as well.

FYI, there is debate about how much fish pregnant women should eat due to mercury levels.

here's that FDA announcement from June 10, 2014

quote:

The draft updated advice recommends pregnant women eat at least 8 ounces and up to 12 ounces (2-3 servings) per week of a variety of fish that are lower in mercury to support fetal growth and development.

season the fish with salt and pepper
pan saute that bitch in some butter until done.
break the fish up a little with a fork.
add 2 eggs to that bitch and scramble.
turn out onto a plate.
Top with salsa.

Enjoys it. I call this dish the Early Morning Bloody Fish count (or Snatch if you're put off by vulgarity).

Thanks guys!

I really like the one with the tomato, onion and garlic topping.

I also want to fry some, so good advice on pan frying. I just don't use Zatarans fish fry because of all the salt.
