I've been making cold brew coffee for a few months now by just taking a bag of coarse ground (good) coffee, dumping it into a gallon container, filling with filtered water, and letting it sit for 12-24 hours. Makes a pretty good product and lasts my girlfriend and I a week or so.

My question is, what is the benefit of a Toddy over just winging it like I do?

I have done both. The toddy is just way easier to clean up and deal with.

I make some about once a week

I've been wondering the same thing as I just use the French press method for my cold brew

Couple questions:

1. How often do you have to buy filters?
2. How much do you end up making per batch?

every ten times you have to change them out. They are cheap as hell on amazon

quote:

Fill - First, insert the stopper into the outside bottom of the brewing container; then, dampen the filter and insert it into the inside bottom of the brewing container.

Next, add 1 cup of water into the bottom of the Toddy brewing container and 6 ounces of ground coffee. Slowly pour 3 more cups of water over the grounds, in a circular motion. Then, add the remaining 6 ounces of ground coffee. Finally, wait 5 minutes and slowly add the last 3 cups of water. DO NOT STIR (stirring the bed of grounds can result in a clogged filter).

Lightly press down on the topmost grounds with the back of a spoon to ensure all grounds get wet.

Brew - Steep your coffee grounds at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours to create a smooth, rich flavor.

Filter - Remove the stopper and let your coffee concentrate flow into the glass decanter - stays fresh for up to 2 weeks in your refrigerator.

Serve - We recommend starting with a ratio of 1 part coffee concentrate to 2-3 parts water, milk or soy. Mix to taste, making your coffee as strong or as weak as you prefer. For rich, smooth iced coffee, simply pour coffee concentrate and water, milk or soy over ice. Combine coffee concentrate with steaming hot water for a bolder, gentler cup of hot coffee.

^^^^that will last me about week or so. Really depends on how much i am putting and how strong i need it.

If you got a good thing going or a french press you are not losing much other than cotton filter. I got mine as a gift and i love it, would recommend, but if you are cheap there are other ways.

So, worth the $40 you'd say?

I got it as a gift but I believe i gotten that much use out of it. It will last as long as they make the filters.

since you got a jerry rigged system you might not feel so inclined but those who buy the store bought kind are pooping money away

Agreed. The cleaning from my way is a definite hassle. $40 isn't a big deal, so I'm gonna give it a shot. I'll be back to harass you if I don't like it.

I'll think you will enjoy it. Makes a great cup and you don't need to break the bank on beans, just make sure you grind them rough

You'll be satisfied with the Toddy. Much easier cleanup.

I don't like my toddy. Too much to clean up. French press is easier. You have to layer the coffee and a specific amount of water or else the filter clogs. Meh.
