Ciders discussion

I was exposed to ciders on a broad scale while in the Northwest and I am blown away.
For those of you whose experience is limited to Angry Orchard, Woodchuck and Strongbow, I encourage you to step out.
Anyway, are there any widely available ciders that folks here can recommend?

What were some of your favorites?

Too early to have favorites. I just didn't realize there were so many amazing options.
Blue Mountain Cherry with a side pour of El Dorado 12 year old rum was fantastic.
The Basil Mint from Seattle Cider Company was great.
Also loved Cornice from Snowdrift Cider Co. It's aged in whiskey barrels.
The 2Towns Peach Saison was also wonderful.

I don't know about Atlanta, but not much available in BR other than the big ones.
I really enjoy making ciders... super easy compared to beer.

Wow. I may have to look into that.

Austin Eastciders is excellent if you can get it.

We get stuff from Argus and E.Z. Orchards here that I've tried. It's all just hit or miss for me. I thought the E.Z. Orchards stuff was the better of the two. It's from Oregon, so its presence here kinda suggests to me that it might be more widely distributed? I'm not aware of a resource like seekabrew for ciders.
ETA: Apparently Atlanta has Urban Tree which makes ciders
ETA2: And Treehorn
Both of these should be locally available for you

I just went online and tried to order from Blue Mountain and they don't ship to Georgia. Typical.

do these guys (and other southern cideries) order their juice from up north?
I've always wondered this

In a beer thread a while back, I mentioned how successful a cidery could be in Louisiana. Hot weather most of the year and no competition.
.....it received many downvotes.

Sonoma Ciders out of Healdsburg make a terrific pear cider. I'm seeing it more and more lately.

I definitely think craft cider is the next big thing, but like with most things, LA will be a good 10 years behind

I don't know how profitable it would be... but I could see a cidery doing well here.
As always, depends on the quality and location.

There's a cider up here called Wunderkind that's very good. I read an article on them recently that said they were switching from bottles to cans so they can expand their distribution. Another I can recommend is called Citizen Cider (The Full Nelson).

Probably from people who have never tried anything but the BMC versions.
Like me until last week.

That was kind of the point I was trying to make in the previous thread.
There's a couple cideries up here (Boston) that seem to be pretty popular. I've been to them multiple times despite not being a huge fan of cider (too sweet for my taste, in general), but there's always a nice crowd. I can definitely see it becoming bigger in the coming years, and if whoever decides to lead the charge in LA could do very well, IMO.

I sampled about 15 last week and many of them were not very sweet. That is what is so cool.

just not sure how profitable one would be as I assume one would have to still order the juice from up north

Huh. That's in Burlington. Added to the list.
