Citing Nielsen data, Trevor Stirling of Bernstein Research shows that craft beer sales are up only 6 percent this year, well under the 19 percent increase seen only two years ago. "The consensus is that craft beer has slowed down significantly this year," he said. "The scale of the slowdown has come as a surprise to everyone."

One potential explanation for the slowdown is the increasing fragmentation of the beer market, with more small-scale local breweries opening in recent years. Over the last six years, marketshare for the top 10 craft brewers has slipped to 39 percent, from 50 percent.

quote:

The Brewers Association estimates there were nearly 4,300 breweries in the U.S. as of 2015, up 14 percent from the previous year and from only 93 such breweries in 1983. Craft beer accounts for about 21 percent of total U.S. beer sales. A craft brewery is defined as one that produces no more than 6 million barrels of beer per year and whose beer gets its taste from traditional brewing ingredients, among other criteria.

I've been waiting years for the Chicken Littles to be correct. Guess they finally told me.

eventually it has to level off. this shouldnt be a surprise.

its hard to convince someone who has been drinking high life for 20 years to go buy $10 6 packs instead of getting their usual 12 pack for $7.

Never understood why people drink high life. I get your point, a lot of people are fine with just drinking their regular domestic beer over and over again. Ill gladly pay whatever the price difference for a 6 pack if it means I do not have to drink high life ever again my entire life.

I mean, the large rate of growth in sales was bound to come down a bit. States making their laws more palatable for craft breweries help spur the rampant growth, as they were no longer bound by as much socialistic red tape.

How much have Bud, Miller, Coors sales grown over the past three years?

Went to 3 local breweries this past weekend, only one was busy. It's pretty much over.

All you have to do is look at all the shelf turds to realize this.

Its cheap, doesnt taste as bad as people say, and it gets you drunk. Seems good enough for me.

When I grill outside, I'll usually drink high life or pbr. If I am at a regular bar and the craft options are tin roof, abita, etc, ill go with the high life instead.

Pretty dramatic here. Its beer, not your last meal on earth

i believe large breweries are fully capable of producing decent beer, yet persist in making beer that tastes like watered down shite for the masses
make a shitty product and overwhelm the market with said shitty product, the void WILL be filled by the entrepreneurs who create the local product/market
Their bigger problem is that the craft-brews are producing a better beer hands down
Craft brew is not a "craze". It's a superior product even if its a "shelf turd"
but i do still enjoy a pbr every now and then, and if my ole man was still around he would nod in approval
shite i want a beer now

I'm a craft beer snob, but I love Miller High Life. I'm always surprised how good it tastes. Look, after about the fifth or sixth beer of the night, it's just a waste to keep on ordering craft beers or pulling then out the fridge -- you're just a little too drunk to appreciate things. That's when you switch to High Life or PBR. I've ordered Miller Lite in the Bulldog, without any shame.

I went overboard but just wanted to state that I loathe High Life and there is no redeeming quality, not even pony bottles or nostalgia. That being said I do like some Miller Lite, Rolling Rock, Budweiser, etc...

I also enjoy living the High Life from time to time, but indulge in the craft beer craze more often than not.

Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewer's Association, asserting that some of the drop-off in growth is the result of changes in how market researchers gathered their data. "It's hard to know what the exact number is out there. If it's 6 percent or 10 percent, that's a number that many industries in the U.S. economy would kill for."

If that's the case, why even bother with the cheap stuff... straight to the 15% imperial stouts! It's time to get drunk.
