Casual NOLA breakfast

We're doing the Ole Man River half marathon on Sunday the 23rd. Need a rec for a good yet casual (we are going to be sweaty and nasty from 13.1 miles) breakfast/brunch place by City Park (but will consider anywhere within a reasonable distance). I'd rather not go to IHOP or awful waffle if I can avoid it. Thanks!

Betsy's Pancake House on Canal St. It's not that far from City Park Ave.

If you want to stay in that area, try Russell's Marina Grill, which is near West End, on the lake side of City Park.
It should fit your bill. More breakfasty/diner type, than "brunch," but definitely a step above IHOP or the like.
FWIW, they claim to have invented the onion mum there. A guy I know who worked there years ago, says it's true.

Ruby Slipper (right behind Mandina's and very close to where you will be), Oak Street Cafe, Panola Street Cafe
There is no need ever to go to IHOP in New Orleans...we have a really high number of great breakfast places in New Orleans.

Cafe Freret. Not brunch spot, more of a breakfast place....and you can sit outside and eat while you stink.

I know but we're going to be pretty nasty. I don't stink though despite what el tigre says.

Russells also has outdoor dining if you think you are going to be that bad.
Good luck with the run. I might sign up to volunteer out there.

LOL...I meant cheap breakfast spots....I would rank the cheap casual ones like this...
1.) Surrey's
2.) Blue Plate Cafe
3.) Elizabeth's
4.) Oak St. Cafe
5.) Petunia's
6.) Coffee Pot
7.) Coffea
8.) Refuel
9.) Ruby Slipper
10.) Peppermill
11.) Panola St. Cafe
You could smell or not smell at any of these places.
I suggested the ones closer to City Park...Surrey's is the best cheap breakfast joint in the city IMO.

not a fan of Cafe Freret, huh? that's become my spot b/c there is rarely a wait, easy parking, and can sit outside, and the food is solid.

Surrey's is aweful! Nobody should go to this place. Its horribly overrated. I saw rats all over the place when I went.

Only been to CF for lunch, el tigre, I will have to check breakfast out.

Cafe Freret has the only hashbrowns that i actually order by choice. Not a big hash brown/french fry fan, but theirs are damn good.

where on Freret is Cafe Freret?

I will have to get them....
Its two blocks off of Broadway.
