Big Green Egg "explosion"

I was cooking some flank steak and had a grill basket with veggies in it on the grill with the fire going about 400°. I had some pretty good size chunks of B&B lump in the grill.
I lifted the lid to flip the meat and the damn thing went off like a damn shotgun, scared the shite out of me.
I wasn't convinced that it was the grill for a bit because it startled me so bad. The more I thought about it I don't know what else it could have been.
Anyone ever had this happen or know what could have caused it? I've got to get home this evening with some daylight and inspect it for damage, I'm worried the fire box or egg itself may have cracked.

You have to burp the lid when cooking at higher temps.

I've done that previously when cooking at 500°+.........I've been cooking on eggs for several years now.
I opened the lid as I typically do, a little slow, didn't fling it open.
It surprised the shite out of me. It was so damn loud my neighbors came outside to see WTF was going on.

Every time I read one of these threads, the more I'm convinced these BGE's are the biggest pain in the arse methods of cooking ever invented.

Hahaha, no burns or anything. That's the weird thing, there was no "rush" of flames or anything that came out of the grill. Just a loud "BOOM"

Really no more a pain in the arse than any other charcoal grill.

Not really, but there is a learning curve that, with a little effort and smarts, is easy to get past.
It must suck to lack the intelligence to master something as simple as cooking with the big green egg.

Seriously?
When was the last time your Weber kettle grill caused an explosion so loud that it drew your neighbors out of their house?

I'll give you that, but commenting on something you know little about shows a lack of intelligence, don't you think?
Now, go get you some Mickey D's.

I've heard about this happening but I've never had it happen to me...

Commenting that a BGE is a pain in the arse because you have to take special precautions to keep it from exploding is an easy observation to process and understand unless you're blinded by your lust of the BGE (or the explosion from it).

Yeah, seriously. You know when the last time my BGE caused an explosion so loud that it drew my neighbors out of their house? Never.

It was surely a first for me

What happened is the fire burned all the oxygen out of the airtight BGE. The flames die down, but the heat remaines and all that is needed to reignite is O2. When introduced too fast you have a 'backdraft' To avoid this simply open both the top and bottom vents to let off some heat and get some O2 to the fire.

Idk why, but this made me laugh.
After having a komado joe, and the homedepot knockoff a few years ago, ceramics are great but they aren't for me.
A large steel pipe pit is still the bees knees for bbq. And the 30lb weber is much easier to move around when the wind is blowing the smoke where I don't want it.

Forgive my stupid question, but with a damper on the bottom and the top piece in place, how is there no O2 in the BGE? You'd need the damper opened to keep the heat going, right? What am I missing here?

You know what happened the last time somebody used that line.
