Guys,

My work team will be staying at the Intercontinental in downtown Austin and are looking to do a group dinner, preferably near SoCo or 6th street. Guys are from all over the country and I want them to get the authentic experience. We're going to Lockhart the following night, so I figure Tex Mex and walking around on South Congress would be a fun experience. I don't want to do Manuel'a, so give me some other ideas please.

Lockhart: Kruetz for the experience, Blacks for the food.

Guerro's on Soco used to be pretty good, but i haven't been in years.

White people may like Chuys on Barton Springs food better.

I would consider the Salt Lick in Driftwood for BBq as well

Go to Matt's El Rancho on S. Lamar. It's just south of downtown but will be exactly what you're looking for and is good for groups. Otherwise, Guerros is your best choice for eating then walking around on S. Congress. If you want to stay in the downtown area then Cantina Laredo could be an option.

I grew up in Austin and Matt's El Rancho is the staple Tex Mex spot for me. The one spot I go every time I'm home. I wouldn't do anything down town to be honest. Expect a wait there though, and get the Bob Armstrong Dip.

Matt's El Rancho is good, but a little ways away from South Congress. Curra's Grill is probably the best you can get that's close to South Congress. It's more interior Mexican than Tex-Mex, but it is one of the best Mexican places in Austin IMO.

We're probably talking about a group of middle aged white people that don't know what an authentic experience is. They most likely want a patio, margaritas, and a server who speaks english.

Not exactly gonna tell them to go to Jalisco's or La Fuentes (RIP)

Guero's has a great atmosphere, but their food is just mediocre. It just depends on what the group wants. Curra's has a patio and servers most definitely speak english. But it doesn't have a patio (and possible band) like Guero's does. Guero's would definitely be more convenient.

Curra's is the answer if good food matters.

Matts and Gueros are mediocre. But if you had to choose one of those. Guero's is better.

Guero's is awful. Don't go there unless you want to walk around South Congress and are there just for the atmosphere.

El Alma is delicious, but a little further down the road from South Congress.

Yeah, it has a patio.

Also, Curra's has plenty of Tex-Mex options as well as interior. I encourage you to get a side of Mole to dip chips in.

Guero's is really bad. Matt's is nice and standard.

That being said, Guero's is your best bet when taking location under consideration

Polvo's is another option.

What's the best Austin restaurant for interior Mexican food?

OP there is a decent outdoor gun range in Lockhart when you make your BBQ trip. $15 for a day pass and you can rent guns. Nothing more authentic than a couple beers, some brisket, and shootin some stuff. Great team building experience imo.
