Under $50. Someone's on a budget.
I loved Laphroaig 10.
This is my scotch summer tour
**I just bought Dewar's 12, not as strong as Laphroaig, I think I like Laphroaig better.

If you like Laphroaig a lot, your palate has now become associated with the heavy iodine and smokey flavors of that being a good scotch. Not many you will find can actually touch that as far as intensity. Some other Islay malts of interest within all ranges are Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Bunnahabhain, Bowmore, or Bruichladdich. I think the Ardbeg and Lagavulin will be outside your range while the younger age varietals of the others should be within the territory of your interest.

Sounds like yoyu've past it, but I second Glenlivet 12. It isn't peaty, smoky or medicinal. I catch whiffs of Bananas Foster on it's nose.
Avoid Macallan fine oak 10yrs, it's very forgettable.

Balvenie 14 is my personal favorite

Undrinkable. And I love Scotch. Tasted like extra peaty rubbing alcohol.
I enjoyed your post very much though, lots of good information

Oddly enough the Lagavulin is milder than the Laphroaig because of its age. The ten year Laphroiag has all the baby fat of a massive peat bomb without the touch of elegance and complexities you get from aging. Ardbeg 10 is possibly more harsh than the Laphroaig. My favorite malts are the Islays, however I will drink just about any single malt, but tend to stay away from the blended stuff. Its just the purist in me. There is something about being able to mentally connect with the area where the aromas are driven from rather than mixing it all together. I will say, however, that I have a great martini recipe where Laproiaig or Lagavulin is used as a seasoning agent as you would vermouth that would make you enjoy it in smaller doses.

Other scotches of repute for the money would be:
Glenmorangie 10, Glenlivet 12, Dalmore 12, Macallan 12---nice mild typical highland malt with a touch of smoke
Balvenie 10 or 12 year---all the scotch flavor without any of the peat (the actually use no peat to my knowledge except for the 17 year peated cask in which the barrel not the malts are peated)
Highland Park 12---good stuff for entry scotch from the Orkney Isles (northernmost region in Scotland)
Talisker 10 year---a good affordable go to for groups of scotch
drinkers having some smokey peat but being well rounded
Cragganmore 12 year---another classic malt along with Talisker that should be one you eventually get to
Connemara----Peated Irish Whiskey (albeit slightly sacrilegious to pure Scotch drinkers, still a good product)
Hope these get you through the summer!

Costco's Macallan 15 year old finished in sherry casks comes in under 50 bucks. Great deal.

Have had, and enjoyed, all of these except for the dalmore. Will check out the rest of your list ASAP. Once again thanks for all the recommendations.

Frack, Balvenie Doublewood, a twelve year old in oak and used sherry cask for six years in each.

Cardhu 12 year is about $40 and great for the price IMO

Actually, the scotch is mostly aged in the neutral bourbon casks for the majority of the 12 years. It is only finished in the sherry casks, which are one time fill casks, for roughly 6 months or so,

Thanks guys! I think I wrote everything down. I'm just now getting into the flavors. I'm going with a bottle a week.

How long is the Glenmorangie 12 yr aged in port barrels actually aged in port barrels?

Have you ever looked at Scotland and Kentucky on a map? Barrels of bourbon aging are not shipped that far. An oak barrel for six and a used Xeres from Espana for six is the key.
BTW the next time you are in the Chimes ask Tim who said you need to get this Scotch. I would like a penny for every drink he served. It would pay me far more than the money that I earned to build the "new" bar area that your butt sits on. Meanwhile Michael Ryan would say F'him.
