I'm headed back home to Kentucky from Mississippi on Tuesday and was wanting to stop while coming through Memphis (or just outside) for some BBQ. I've heard good things about both Memphis Barbecue Co. (I believe in Southhaven) and Rendezvous but was curious if anyone had some other recommendations or if I should go with one of those.

TIA

I liked Rendezvous for both the food and the atmosphere.

I'm a big fan of the Bar-B-Q Shop dry ribs.

I've been to Memphis many a time for work and hit many of them. My personal favorite is the Bar-B-Q Shop, followed by Central. Both are outstanding.

Rendezvous is decent, but honestly, it's for the tourists. I'd skip it, there are a dozen better places to go.

I know the draw to Memphis is the barbecue, but if you're up for it, there's Gus' Fried Chicken, which is some of the best in the country.

Rendezvous
I liked this place. Very good BBQ and the place itself is very unique (in a good way).

Whatever you do don't go to that shithole on Beale. Think it was Blues Cafe or Blues City Cafe or something. They should have paid us to taste that stuff they put on our plates.

All over rated since I've been to Austin (Franklin, La BBQ). The Memphis places are okay but nothing special. I've been to pretty much all of them. Now Gus Fried Chicken is special- go there!!

It's just different. Texas, Memphis, Kansas City - all are BBQ Meccas for a reason. But it's not really fair to compare two different styles.

Don't go to Memphis BBQ Co. in Southaven, there are plenty of better spots to go to, some people have already mentioned the BBQ Shop and Central. What are you looking for? Ribs? Chicken? Pulled pork?

I'm no expert on Memphis but Germantown Commissary was excellent.

You're leaving out one major, heavy hitter...directly east of Tennessee.

No, I didn't. ;)

(I lived in SC for three years, was a SCBA judge, and nothing in the Carolinas comes close to the other three. Just my 2 cents, really, but I can't stand that style.)

If by any chance you end up at Central, which has its virtues, do not get their 'brisket.' It belongs in a cafeteria.

my favorite when I was there was barbq shop

For a pulled pork sandwich Tops BBQ is hard to top.

I HATE the Rendezvous. The waiters are assholes and the ribs are overated. Their sausage cheese plate is their only highlight IMO.

ETA: This is coming from a native Memphian.

My only use for them is sprinkling their rub on top of popcorn. (And that's not nearly as good as when the Public Eye was around). And they used to have some pretty good BBQ Nachos at the Redbirds games. That's about it.

Centrals is decent... like I said earlier, Commissary is best, IMO. If you see a Corky's... do yourself a favor and keep on driving.

Forgot... Cozy Corner is awesome. Over by St. Judes.
