I have had my set of Global knives for almost 6 years and they are awesome. Worth every cent

No way. I like my steak knives just as much as my kitchen knives.

I have mid priced Wusthof steak knives; they're fine. I put them in the dishwasher. The higher end ones need to be hand-washed.

I put all of them in the dishwasher. I am a lazy bastard and only hand wash items that won't fit in the dishwasher. When they feel like they may be losing an edge, I will run the steel on them or put them through the Chef's choice Wusthof electric sharpener and then the steel. Keeps a great edge on them.

ETA: I only lay them on the top shelf where they can't touch each other or any other objects that may be in the dishwasher.

Best bang for the buck would be this Shun Sora 2-piece set - $99 along with this Dexter Russell Cleaver - $40 and this Dexter Russell serrated knife - $20
