I'm heading there this weekend and want to eat the best bbq that area has to offer.

Where do I go? What do I should order?

What? Is this a frequent thread topic here? I don't come here much so if it is that's my bad.

About every other week....google "Austin BBQ Tigerdroppings" and you'll find 5 6 or 7 threads.

Franklins- long arse wait
La Barbecue- Former Franklin Pitmaster and arguably as good as Franklins ( Moved to new location on Ceasra Chavez)
A few other really good places.

The consensus on this board is:

Franklin - the best but wait is too long
La BBQ - Decent wait but as good as Franklin (30 min - 60 min wait)
John Mueller - Wait is not too bad and they have awesome brisket

Same here. This is a strange role reversal for me.

If Lockhart, TX ("capital of TX BBQ") isn't too far out of your way there are some awesome joints there as well.

I like Mueller's in Taylor.

Stubb's was another place I used to go to a lot.

Though the Austin of today doesn't feel like my Austin growing up.

Franklin, as long as you're willing to get there around 9 and wait in line. It's worth it. Think of it as a tailgate.

If you are venturing out to Lockhart go 20 minutes further to Luling City Market. I've had La BBQ, Mueller's and Black's and I like LCM the best. I haven't waited in the line at Franklin's.

ETA I've had Salt Lick too and it and the atmosphere was great.

If you're driving there on I-10 stay on the road for a bit and hit up Luling City Market (make sure it's city market and not "Luling BBQ" across the street).

Many long-time central Texans rate City Market > Lockhart joints but they're all fantastic IMO.

Haven't been to Franklins but take a lawn chair and sixer from what I've heard.

ETA: in a little late..

In Austin, Franklin's, J Mueller's and Salt Lick (the original in Driftwood).

In Lockhart, not too far from Austin, Smitty's, Black's or Kreuz. Black's has great beef ribs. Smitty's has the best brisket I've ever eaten. Have not had Kreuz, but the recommendations are all positive, plus they distribute their sausage to other restaurants as well.

Both are good. Stiles switch stays open all day and its an indoor sit down place. Best place to get bbq after lunch time when everybody else is sold out.

Here's my ranking

Louie Meuller Taylor
Luling city market
La BBQ
Anyplace in lockhart except Smittys (just personal preference)

Salt Lick in driftwood for Texas atmosphere

Mueller meat company- used to be my favorite but I'm off his band wagon. Dude is a dickhead and his food is to inconsistent, sometimes like eating a ball of pepper and other times brisket is nothing but fat. It's because he does not care about his customers and uses the cheapest meat he can find.

Franklins on the other hand loves his customers and uses the absolute best meat that can be found and it makes all the difference. Only reason I put him on the bottom is the long arse line. His bbq is best in town if you dont mind the wait.

Edit- I'll slinging some pretty damn good ribs out of my backyard this weekend in Round Rock.

The concept of "Austin" and its various cool hangouts/events started to get commercialized and heavily corporatized in the 90's.... not to mention it's turned into L.A. east.

I lived in Travis Heights on the cheap in the late 80's & early 90's. Check out the price/sq. foot there now.

And Dallas, well, it hasn't changed much. Dallas' identity has always been plastic new money douchebaggery. It's just bigger and even shinier now, especially in the expansive breeding pens of the exurbs.

I'd say A like D but D like A is kind of a stretch for me. But I just visit both a lot.

If in Lockhart stop at Chisholm Trail and get a chopped beef sandwich. It's the only thing I believe they have that is better than any others but man it is phenomenal.

I've eaten John Mueller's a few times at his various locations and I really like it but he sure can be a pain in the arse, but then again Pokie is a pain in the arse and I eat there. I'm not looking for friends. Franklin worked for him and actually ended up with his old pit.

I'm a Smitty's fan but I do like Salt Lick.
