It will soon be time for king cakes. What are some good king cake places in the Baton Rouge area?

Is Gambino's still open? Those are good.

Ambrosia does a good job too. They have a Zulu King Cake that is good, but damn it's rich. One small piece is all you need.

Ambrosia on Perkins makes a good king cake.

Otherwise, I'm a fan of Antoine's Bakery in NOLA.

The last few years there has been a Mardi Gras store on Airline near Florida Blvd. that has been getting Randazzo's delivered every few days. They don't stay on the shelf very long but it's been my little slice of heaven.

King Cake threads are always the most likely on the food board to have a post end with: /thread

Strangely, the best one I have found in the BR area is at Cal's Bakery on Burnside in Gonzales. I'm not saying it's worth a special trip if you are not in the area (I think they ship), but they are pretty damn good.

Since a real king cake, not those big fried donuts some morons call a king cake, is a baked yeast bread, freshness has a lot to do with quality. The best bakery in town's day old king cake is not as good as a fresh one from someone less skilled. They are like shrimp, the fresher the better.

If you like those fried things, go ahead, its a king donut, not a cake. It's like calling arena football, football.

So Good!

I think their cakes are better than even Zoes in Covington, especially for the price.

If it isn't a McKenzie's king cake, it is just an imitation.

Ahh, the other "hot topic" of king cakes. Filled or unfilled. To me a king cake, when done properly, needs no filling. I find a lot of people do this to mask their shitty king cake skills. Call me old fashioned or a king cake snob but give me an unfilled Randazzo's, Haydels, or old school McKenzie's(R.I.P) any day over the filled cakes.

Odd. I probably wouldn't drive that far for a great hamburger, great steak, or great barbeque, but for some reason, I feel a road trip comin' on.
