I made a thread recently asking about beers to try in the DFW area. Sculpin wasn't one of the recommended ones but I saw a single in a store and noticed the high beer advocate score so I grabbed one.

Verdict: One of the worst IPA's I've had. There was no kick. It's described as a well rounded beer but I just felt it was very bland and nothing special. I tried the Grapefruit Sculpin at a bar and disliked that one as well.

I'll update my other thread with my haul once I get back home. The beer selection in this area is awesome.

What was the date on the can? I find fresh Sculpin to be very enjoyable

Other IPA's I had on this trip were Mosaic and Upslope. Both of which I enjoyed much, much more. I bought several to bring home but couldn't list them all until I unwrap them back home.

Ballast Point makes an excellent IPA. Not sure if you got a bad one or just have terrible taste?

I'm not a fan of Sculpin, but I wouldn't say it is a bad IPA. I would choose it over the Upslope.

I've had the original and grapefruit. Liked the original over grapefruit.

However, finally got my hands on Pineapple Sculpin last week and loved it. Packed some of the canned stuff in my suitcase and will be drinking it at home for the next few weeks.

I agree. I love me some fresh original Sculpin more than pineapple but I definitely enjoyed the pineapple more than grapefruit. Grapefruit is my favorite fruit as well.

I like the grapefruit over the others. Pineapple is the least likeable to me.

I like the origin and love the grapefruit. I haven't tried the pineapple yet, but will soon. Thanks for the advice.

Like most BP beers it is pretty good but tremendously overpriced

I don't understand the hate, but whatever. I didn't find it crazy priced but it was certainly underwhelming. I guess I was excited from the hype and just didn't agree with it.

There is a good chance that if it was a single at a store then it may have been old and the hops had fallen out.

Yeah I didn't even think to check the date, but I felt the same about the grapefruit on draft I had so it probably wasn't a date issue and I just didn't care for it.

This is always a debate with BP. People don't like sculpin and other run to call them idiots that don't know what they are talking about. Not every beer is for everyone.

Edit: and yes it tends to be crazy priced compared to what else is out there IMO.

This. Pretty darn good IPA, but I'm not paying $14 for a 6 pack of 12ozers.

Oddly enough, my experience at bars is that it's in range with other quality IPAs. So I'll order it on draft, but won't buy off the shelves.
