My new gym is pretty hardcore and asks all of us to go Paleo. Seems tough but doable. Anyone else on it? Tips? Success stories?

Thanks

What do you think will be the toughest for you?

make it 10-14 days, cut out all sugar, it will be hard, but once you hit that you are in the clear. Beating sugar is like beating a drug addiction. You're body will revolt a little, you might get a little crabby, but you'll feel a lot better after 10 days.

1. Your wallet

Replacing carbs and other fillers like rice, bread, pasta, etc with all fresh veggies and meats isnt so bad. Other than the initial lack of energy from your body learning to rely on fats instead of sugar for energy, I really enjoyed it, but it gets expensive.

2. Time.

Extra time at the store and extra time prepping meals. There is barely anything you can buy from convenience stores or from most quick lunch spots that will qualify as paleo. When I didn't prep lunch I usually hit zoes for chicken and veggies when necessary.

ETA: full disclosure, i did paleo jan-april this year and I am no longer on a full paleo diet but it def still influences what I eat today.

Good luck with crossfit. Keep weight light until you get the form down. Back to the main question. It can be done fairly easily. Like Lester said, the first two weeks are tough but after that it's pretty easy. I use Sunday and Thursday as cooking days. I prep everything and cook a couple of meals that will allow left overs to supplement the other days.

If you're trying to cut weight limit the nuts. This can be a crutch when you first start. Good luck.

Starting it tomorrow to cut cholesterol so we'll see how it goes. Only thing I won't be cutting out completely is beer (but I'll just be drinking a lot less).

I'm starting keto in January which is just about the same thing. I don't need to lose weight, I just want a change of lifestyle. Been doing my research and realized once I get past the initial shock, it should be rather nice. Pretty much all my favorite foods fall into the keto/paleo category. Hardest part will be giving up sugar

Keto requires you to consume a lot more fat, a lot less carbs and protein, and doesn't restrict dairy.

I tried keto and it worked for me, I just found it was something I couldn't stay on long term.

Do your research

Paleo and Keto are good for short term but it's not a long term fix

Getting healthy is a lifestyle change. Make small changes, move more, eat less, follow the 80/20 rule on eating well.

It's that easy. I have a nutritionist and a personal trainer who has a PH.D. and is ripped to shreds. Both of them rail on the paleo diet and think it's BS. Any diet that tells you a certain food or food group is "bad" is bullshite and bro science. Corn isn't bad, legumes and beans might be the healthiest food for a male. Carbs aren't the enemy. My good friend a cross fit guy and swears by paleo. He's lost a few lbs but is still overweight. Went to his house this weekend and he was bragging about his paleo trail mix as he was downing handful after handful. All about its natural nectar and blah blah. It probably had 100-150 calories a handful and dude probably ate 700-800 calories in the 5 minutes he was snacking on it. He's not losing weight and is still fat but hey it's "paleo friendly brah".

I have 7% body fat and have kept my 70lb weight loss off for 8 years and I consume about 400 carbs per day. Guys I've met at the gym who look like a NFL linebackers all eat shite tons of carbs.

I'm a huge fan of flexible dieting. Google Dr Layne Norton. He's stuff is legit. He follows flexible dieting and has some great articles and you tube videos.

It's a process, not a 21 day or 30 day fix. It's a lifestyle change.

There was an article published last year and they ranked every diet out there from 1-32 and asked about 50 doctors, dieticians and trainers. Paleo finished dead last.

At the end of the day it's calories in vs calories out. When people cut carbs you lose weight, no shite. What's the last two syllables of a carb? Hydrate. When you cut them you cut your water weight and lower your glycogen stored in your muscles, therefore giving you a more ripped look. That's why bodybuilders cut them out days before a competition. That's why when you have a huge Italian meal you go up 2-3 lbs. it's not bad, it will even out. Your body needs them to operate

Now just remember all carbs aren't equal. You don't have to cut carbs, just cut empty processed carbs. A donut isn't the same as a sweet potato or brown rice.

Good luck, the hardest part is the first week or two and then it becomes a habit. Just try to weed out all the gimmicks and BS and don't take everything a cross fit douche tells you as gospel.

At the end of the day if you're doing something and it's made you healthier and you like, then keep it up. Just saying I doubt in 5 years you're still going to be doing low carb, Etc

Solid advice.

I fell into this trap a little. Just because it's Paleo doesn't mean it's good for you. I've had the most success with the "Whole 30". "It Starts with Food" is the name of the book. The book has a lot of nutritional information which was enlightening. I've been doing it for about 6 months. The main take out of the diet is to eat three square meals containing a protein, vegetable and a healthy fat. You can have other things in moderation such as fruit and potatoes but you must maintain the three square meals.

Good luck!

That's awesome. Sounds like a good plan.

You mentioned something important. Fats. People forget how important they are. Healthy fats are essential for brain function.

Eggs
Olive oil
Nut butters
Fish

Have you seen that hilarious video that made the rounds on social media? It's like a first date in a fancy restaurant and the girl salivates over the specials as the waiter tells her them and then she orders a bacon burger, well done, no bun. She goes on to say cavemen lived much longer and healthier lives than us and a few other silly things. I found it funny.

I know I am a broken record when it comes to weight watchers, but the funny thing is that even though I don't do the keto or paleo or anything like that, I am pretty close to doing it almost by default.

I don't eat much sugar (other than for a treat from time to time), very little bread, lots of lean protein, fresh fruit and vegetables and moderation in everything.

It has worked great for me.

Disclaimer: I will be in BR this weekend and mass quantities of everything "bad" (RB Poboys, beignets, alcoholic beverages, boudin, etc.) will be consumed.

The funny thing is the special she didn't order was cod. When her date said, "They didn't have cod in the paleolithic era?".. she responded with, "Not with lemon butter"..

But isn't butter and lemon both okay on the paleo diet?

I do agree with some of the items you are commenting on. In the end, calories in vs calories out will be the determining factor. However, the science behind keto/paleo isn't outlandish. There is no benefit to a carb for your body other than strictly energy. If your body learns to use fat as energy, then you don't have to eat any carbs to maintain optimal health. Taking those two main points in mind, construct a diet that is maintainable to you while still providing the nutrients you need....fewer calories in than out and cut out all unnecessary carbs. If you still need carbs to avoid falling off the wagon, dive into some brown rice or a sweet potato. You don't need bread, chips, pasta, sugar as part of a healthy diet.

I can't really comment on Paleo since I don't know too much about it, but if it is similar to Keto, then it just makes it easier for your body to lose the fat. Once your body gets past the wall and learns to use fat for fuel instead of stored carbs, then you will shred rather quickly. Once you get to your goal, then you maintain a healthy lifestyle by taking the backbone of the diet and modifying it so it can be something that you can stay with long term.

By far the biggest benefit of a keto or paleo diet is simple. Protein and fats are far more satiating than carbohydrates.

keto may be, paleo is not. I eat legumes and beans, which has always been in question. Some think no, some think yes. In the end it isnt going to impede any progress.

Also Paelo isnt carb free. You dont know what you're talking about
