I usually just tip a couple of dollars at counter service and window pick-up type places.

However, I recently ate at DiMartino's in Covington where you order at a counter, but the food is brought to your table, they pour your beer at your table, and bus the table as you eat. The dining room was also much nicer than typical counter-service places.

I had tipped a few dollars at the counter, but was not expecting as much table service and didn't have any cash to leave on the table as an extra tip.

I guess my question is: how would you tip in this kind of establishment? Considering the level of service, I don't really understand why they would opt for a counter over waitstaff.

I tip a buck at the jar on the counter. that is it. If they bring it to your table and didn't screw tha tup, they don't get any more.

Counter tipping places alwasy split the tips between employees anyway.

I tip when I pay.

Place like La Madeleine doesn't even have a line for tips on CC transactions nor do they have a tip jar.. yet they bring food to your table and bus it. I don't tip because they make at least minimum wage. (And because they make tipping impossible unless you have cash to hand to someone)

Izzos, Zoe's, Zippy's, etc. I might throw a dollar in the tip jar but again.. they're making at least minimum wage. They're not servers.
