The wife and I are thinking about taking a tour of the abita brewery and going to the brew pub. We would make a weekend of it. Is there anything to do in the surrounding area and is it worth going?

the tour is pretty cool. the pub/ restaurant is good. if you can bring bikes or rent bikes ride the tammany trace. it's a lot of fun and the pub is on the trail

The Barley Oak is pretty much on the bike trail (a few blocks off toward the lake) and is a really nice place.

Depending on your appetite for strangeness, there's the UCM Museum. It's an outsider art place. Very much in the David Lynch/John Waters vein. Pretty cool.

The Barley Oak looks real good. Any place with over a hundred selections of beer is a good place to me. The museum looks interesting as well. I'm always up for a new adventure. Where is a good place to stay the night at?

Well, we live in BR, so it is a little jaunt for us and we don't stay overnight. I think there are some camps for rent or a B&B in Abita Springs.

Yes. Good beer, sausage plates, and cheese plates on the lake = happy.
