Influence Ratebeer to show better ratings for InBev owned products and lower ratings for competition?

Have you ever seen the movie The Big Short?

something something something about the banks paying off the credit rating bureaus for favorable ratings.

I use Beer Advocate. I agree that ratebeer kind of sucks.

I wouldn't put it past them. They'll do what they can, even if it's in a legal "gray area" to benefit their own brand, as they've done in the past with distributors.

They can infiltrate the reviews too:

"The chocolate notes and handcrafted excellence of this Westvleteren XII show a distinct lack of beech wood aging, and therefore can't hold a candle to this finely mass crafted Bud Light. It is a nice beer, so I'll rate it a 78, a mere 16 points behind the aforementioned Bud Light"

They bought it last year and just making the announcement, now you have head of DogFish Head asking for their beers to be removed.

They kept it quiet to "get points on the board without the disruption of the public"

Horrible and sneaky.

Probably more for data mining than influencing ratings.

I haven't looked at the ratebeer or beeradvocate site in years. I always thought the ratings were of dubious merit anyway. I do look at the "Places" section on ratebeer to find craft beer pubs when I travel.

They buying up everything. Buying Northern Brewer, every brewery they can get their hands on. Pulling the Microsoft strategy. If you can't beat'em, buy'em.

I do look at Untappd ratings. When I go into a taproom and there are numerous beers that I haven't had before, I check to see if the beer is horrible. If the beer has 600 check ins and still has 2 and a half stars, then I'm taking it off the table. Anything close to 4 stars stays on the table for me and I'll at least ask for a sample.

I've found a lot of beers with 3.8 stars that I've enjoyed. Hell, I think Envie is only 3.9 stars. I know why that is, but you never know what the situation is with any beer.

Same... well, I look at the "places" section on BeerAdvocate.

In whole, this acquisition rates a big fat "who cares?" to me.

This makes the most sense. Finding out what people are actually drinking and if they like it or not goes a long way to telling a brewery what to make as a business. For example, on untappd, urban south's holy roller has as many total check ins as the brewer's next 6 or 7 honest check in beers combined, including delta momma and charming wit. Urban South has advantage of sales data, but others can look at that and see why they are produce so many ipas. AB Inbev can so this on a larger scale and get more into the weeds (e.g. blueberry or mango ipas in the South?).
