whats a good editing program for photography

My wife just really started to like photography as a hobby and would like a good editing program, besides the one that came with the Canon Rebel I bought her. What are ya'lls suggestions?

Is that the wife?

Photoshop and/or GIMP will be a whole lot of the answers from this.

Gimp is very powerful and free. Photoshop is also very good and the new creative cloud online service is nice, but for a casual photographer it's probably overkill. Adobe Lightroom will likely have most everything a photographer needs, at least as far as processing the photo.

The first thing you need is Lightroom. It is a developing software to get your images where you want them.

Next I would buy HDR software (Promatix or something). It is great for landscapes etc.

PS and Gimp are more for creating a whole different image.

If you get great shots to start with, you don't need PS or Gimp, just Lightroom.

thanks for the suggestions ya'll. I told her about gimp because I've seen it mentioned on here before. I'll get her to check out the lightroom software.

You can get Lightroom relatively cheap ($80), and if all your wife is doing is managing and touching up photos instead of manipulating them, Lightroom is perfect.

The full name for Lightroom is “Adobe Photoshop Lighroom”, which may sound confusing, because it contains the word “Photoshop”. In a way, it makes sense, because Lightroom can be considered a subset of Photoshop with specific functionality that Photoshop does not and probably will never have. It was created for the main purpose of managing a large number of images, keeping them organized in one place. Photoshop is a very advanced image editing tool, but when you edit hundreds of images, keeping them organized becomes a problem over time.

gimp is good, but it doesn't support .raw files (I don't think), which, if she's wanting to edit her photos most effectively and realistically, will need a program that does.

My wife loved to use pixlr.com

It's free, no downloads and has a very common pic editing interface.

So she can't use gimp to touchup the photos that she takes after uploading them from her camera? But, where would I go to download the program?

Oh she could, but I'm not sure of it's limitations (I've never used it).

But you can get gimp here www.gimp.org/?

Lightroom is good, I agree.

Might want to check into Topaz Labs as well. They have a great assortment of filters which would probably come in handy for her as well. Takes the scripting and automation aspect out of the equation.

re: whats a good editing program for photography
GIMP edits JPG photo files. JPG is the "default" file that comes out of almost every digital camera out there. However, with something like a Canon Rebel your wife may find that she prefers to use the raw files (the raw output of the camera, JPG has some in camera processing done to the files). Using RAW gives the photographer more options/control over the photo file. GIMP can't read RAW files, but something like Lightroom/Photoshop can.

FWIW, I started out using Lightroom which is very affordable for how powerful it is. It makes editing pretty easy, photo organization fairly simple, takes plugins (addon programs) pretty well, and gives you a good feel for what Photoshop can do.

Get lightroom. IT's great, and does everything I need except HDR and I don't use that often. I have a separate program ($60) for that. I shoot in RAW, process with lightroom and am happy with the results.

Another vote for LR here.

I just started using it a few weeks ago and it's really an awesome program.
