Now add a text layer and make it the top layer.

When I make this layer the top layer, is it important to have a certain animation frame/layer selected?

What if I want different text to show up at different points... i.e. creating phrases etc as the gif animation progresses.

Am I right to assume it's just a new 'top' layer and then adjust the visibility?

I haven't tried any of this yet, but I understand the basic idea of what you're saying.

Just too hungover to give it a go right now

I observe that my MAC has Gimp 2.6.8 loaded.

I observe that the most current version is apparently 2.6.11.

Please guide me whether the release 2.6.8 is an ok release to use for TD purposes or if not, which releases are least buggy.

Is it highly recommended to use the most current version or can I use the 2.6.8 without conflicts on TD?
I am an utter beginner on this software.
I HAVE YET TO USE IT AT ALL.

By default it will add the new layer above the layer that is currently selected. But you can always move the layer to the top with a drag-and-drop.

You got it. Just make sure all the text layers are above the last layer of the original GIF and you are golden.

Now, go forth and conquer...and if you need any more help, just let me know.

I would go to gimp.org and upgrade to the latest version. Its free so there is nothing to loose. Every time they release a new version I would think it is a little better than the last. I have problems every once in a while but if you save your progress periodically its is not a big deal.

I just tried again to no avail... what's your email, I don't want to keep flooding this thread with my specific problems, I'm beginning to feel like that a-hole in class who asks personal questions that pertain only to them during class.

Tim,
I guess I gave up on that gradient bar thingy I was trying for. I think I was doing something wrong when trying to download that plugin. I'm afraid I may have launched a bit too fast into it. I just stepped away from making anything. I caught myself thinking..."I know I can make this, I'll just do it later". I wonder if any of you guys ever feel this way. I can now see (from this side of it) that if you "DO" get it and know how...it doesn't really take that long to produce most anything. I was playing around last weekend with a pic and still trying to cut out faces and/or bodies from one pic and use them in another one. It's not coming as fast as I'd like, so I just exit out and try another day. I'm not giving up by any means, I'll get it one day...probably when my daughter visits this summer, I've been trying to get her on Paintnet or Gimp. She seems interested.
Thanks to ALL you fellas here for helping and oldster.

Here's what I could come up with. Hope GOP isn't too upset. I did leave his name on since he is the original creator of the background.
I was wanting to get it done before the NCAA tourney began. I started at 8:30am and finished at 7:15pm. I'm too slow!!
thanks

The idea is solid, the creative portion is lacking a bit with the copy... I'd tone down the red a bit... maybe go black, simpler borders.

But excellent effort for first try... keep em coming!

Thanks Yankee I actually got tired of fooling with it and quit After learning a few of the tricks, a guy wanted the Rebel Hat placed on the huge gar that was caught in Mississippi with Peeping Croom put in it. After posting it, I realized I forgot to do the layer mask in the lower left around the hat but I didnt think it turned out too bad.

RATTLE! I DID IT! I woke up early and was determined to figure it out...

And I did.

It's not perfect, but it's my first gift with text animation added...

After I re-read a lot of what you had said, about the visibility, I started playing around with the layers... so basically you have all your text layers at the top, click the sequence bar and select "view" or "no view"... got it.

( took me about 25 clicks before I figure out the multi-frame select... )

Well, here it is, thanks for the help man.

nicely done!

I love this thread

Now go make an album and play around with Fonts and design... instead of manipulation. Different kind of artist.

Excellent! You are on the way. You can now use the same concepts to create something simple like this:

Instead of text in the top layer, it's just an image. (and a bit of blur for a motion effect)

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

blurring on the layers on the layer list or the image at the top?

I'm assuming just for continuity?

Also, am I right to assume that desaturating the image so you don't have to deal with color leveling is a lot easier?

Just the image at the top. I used two Kige heads in that one. I just blurred a copied layer of Kige when I had it desaturated, matched in look and cleaned up. When his head is moving up or down, use the blurred layer. When his head is at the top or bottom (not moving as much), use the original (unblurred) layer. It's a small thing, but it helps the look of it.

Yes

Correct. A lot of times you will see a color tint or sepia in photos. If I am farking something into that photo, most of the time I will desaturate/grayscale both images. You can always add a color tint when you are done. That way it applies to both images the same instead of trying to match a tint to the original image.

Got it. The subtleness of the blur during vertical motion isn't noticeable I'm sure unless you showed them side to side, but I know exactly what you mean.

I'm gonna put something together. Make you proud.
