Logo Project
Posted by Envy on 3/14/11 at 6:14 am00
My girlfriend has to create a logo for a company/restaurant/bar for a graphics design course.
She randomly drew from a hat "wet" and "sailor" (yeah, I know...) she was allowed to take the "premise" of the words to make a decent sounding company. So she needs to create approximately 25-ish ideas and I'm running on fumes, so I thought I'd ask here.
It's rather time sensitive in that she has 2-3 days to come up with them... She's feeling stupid overwhelmed as a graphics design major and this isn't her only class with design requirements this week.
I was hoping the fark board could/would take pity and help out.
(She was able to use deviations of the random word draw and has come up with "Soggy Nautilist". Think; bar/restaurant on the water and she needs a logo.)
I came up with these 9 and would love any input. The criteria is, there is no criteria.. if you had to make a logo/brand for a bar called "the soggy nautilist", what would you do?
Desaturate (black and white) and let me see what you've got. I don't need a ton of responses, whatever you can think of. No size restraints, her and I are just burned out on ideas.
Thanks a million in advance.

I don't like doing homework for other people, especially their girlfriends...
But you were honest up front, which is rare, so I feel a need to contribute:
Maybe this will help.
oh, and pics?

I only have the one compilation "pic" I posted, but thanks, that's absolutely what we're looking for!
You guys are awesome!

I was thinking the same thing... but at least he was honest about it...
when I was in graphic design, a logo project like this would entail 'thumbnails', basically very small, maybe 2"x2" at most, sketches of a bunch of ideas. They'd only be in pen, nothing would ever be brought into the computer till much later on.
Tell her not to fret over it, my teachers would only walk around and look to see you had enough drawings, nothing would be turned in. Tell her just to use word association, list out a bunch of words that she associates with 'wet' and 'sailor', then list words that she associates with those words. This helps come up with different directions/concepts/etc you might not normally think of. Then think of some iconography she can use, such as the anchor you already have. Try to incorporate them together in some meaningful and compelling way.
Is it a Graphics Abstraction course? what's the name of it?
They're looking for concepts here, not nice looking logos with clip art lol. Hope that helps more than me turning in ideas for her will!
ETA: I'm sure she's already been taught this, but don't forget to use some basic principles when designing these logos: LINK
Almost all those logos listed so far are an illustration, with some words next to them. They have no ties to each other and are separate. They should work together somehow. Also, don't worry about fancy fonts yet, this is the beginning stage. That's like working with color right now, which you already know not to. I wouldn't even work in grayscale, black and white only.

I had some ideas other than Soggy and Nautilist. Nautilist isn't even a word. What about Mariner? Seafarer?
