What program do you guys use to do your farks? I would assume photoshop, but I have never messed with it.

Most here use Photoshop and GIMP. In fact, I haven't heard anyone use anything other than Photoshop or GIMP. If there are others, speak up :).

I've been thinking of getting a copy of photoshop but have heard there is a big learning curve. Any tips for a beginner? I mean, is there a decent tutorial out there you could recommend?

The learning curve honestly isn't that steep if you have a clear, realistic objective in mind regarding what you want to accomplish with your Photoshop. I'd imagine if you want to get to the level of the elite on these boards, the learning curve would be excruciatingly steep. If you want to use Photoshop recreationally to squeak out the funny .jpeg here and there, it's pretty easy to learn. Essentially, if the latter is your goal, Google queries of tutorials you want and the learning curve is pretty easy. Took me about a week to start getting halfway competent, but you should aim higher than me so it should take you 1-2 weeks.

I use Photoshop cuz I didn't have to pay for it; otherwise I would use GIMP cuz it's free and does basically everything that Photoshop does.

Stay with GIMP. Unless you are making a living off photo editing, there's no need to upgrade to Photoshop.

For those that use GIMP. I just downloaded it and I'm not able to see the "layer" toolbar or box that shows the eyes and the different layers. How can I make this visible again?

I use photoimpact pro, but only because it came with my computer. It's a capable program and didn't take me long to learn my way around it.

Is there a best place to learn how to use GIMP? I know there are a few tutorials out there but I've only ever used paint and I'm not quite sure how everything works, such as layers and what not.
