Is there such a thing as a bad or good pick in Rnd 11?
Posted on 2/25/15 at 5:31 pm to PortCityTiger24
I put together a really shitty quick glance rankings for batting, hitting, and overall. These don't factor in total depth or future outlook. I looked at the likely starters for hitting and the first 2-3 starting pitchers and relievers. Also, I didn't add up pitching + hitting and divide it, because I don't think that gives a true picture (all things aren't created equal). I'd say 13 teams, just by a quick glance, have a chance at the post season. Some more than others.

Best pick/worst pick:
The "worst" picks later on in the draft mean a lot less because the opportunity cost is so much smaller.
Round 12
Best - 12.11 Jake McGee - Lou
If healthy and guaranteed the full time closer role, then McGee would be a potential top 10 closer. Dude has filthy stuff. At this point, he is a very high upside pick with serious potential once he comes off the DL.
Cwill gets an honorable mention with Santiago Casilla. He should be a solid closer with a pretty safe job, especially with Romo injured.
Worst - 12.8 Randal Grichuk - Clams
Playing time is his only issue. If Grichuk gets the at-bats, then this could be a solid pick. He held his own in his 2014 cup of coffee, despite a brutal K/BB ratio.
Round 13
Best - 13.1 Kennys Vargas - Geaux
This one was a shocker. Vargas will probably be 35% of Jew's team homers, but his power is for real. He is a giant listed at 6'5" 275, but he has a pretty low floor. I think Jew will be able to move him for a pick.
Worst - 13.7 Kyle Schwarber - Clams
I feel like I am picking on Clams here, but we must have different thoughts for this season. However, I would be shocked if Schwarber made it to Chicago in 2015. Wasted pick IMO unless Clams thinks he could be a keeper after this season.
Round 14
Best - 14.9 Trevor Plouffe - Chat
I really like Plouffe a lot. He is pretty decent and he should put up solid counting stats. 15-20 homers from a backup 3B sounds nice to me.
Worst - 14.5 Kendrys Morales - LE
God, he was awful last year. However, there are not many truly bad picks at this point and Morales was the best chance at 20+ homers from the remaining pool (outside of Ryan Howard).
Round 15
Best - 15.3 Drew Stubbs - G$
I love Stubbs. Maybe I should have grabbed him with my most recent pick in the 12th. He had huge splits last year, but he went 46/12/33/11/.356 with a .999 OPS in 68 games at Coors. He is a must start at home and a great pick.
Worst - 15.14 Justin Smoak - Earl
Not a bad pick at all, but Smoak just does not do it for me. I completely forgot he had 19 and 20 homers in 2012 and 2013, respectively, but he will still never live up to his lofty expectations.
Round 16
Best - 16.13 Derek Norris - Chat
Norris is a favorite of mine. An 11.4% career walk rate is great. Norris is my new Iannetta (catcher with great plate discipline and average pop). In 2014, .361 OBP with 10 homers sounds great to me. He is moving from one pitcher's park to another, but he will not have to compete for at-bats this year because Oakland was overcrowded at catcher big time last season.
Worst - 16.4 Logan Morrison - Papz
More games played before getting injured or more Tweets in an average week for LoMo?
Round 17
Best - 17.10 Aaron Hill - LE
Aaron Hill has always been a fantasy favorite of mine even if that star is dulling. Hill is aging, so I am guessing the wheels are gone after a couple straight of no stealing, but I still believe in his 20 homer upside (although 15 is more realistic).
Worst - 17.6 Sergio Romo - Chat
I totally get chasing saves here from a set-up man, but why not get a healthy one?
Round 18
Best - 18.1 Brandon Maurer - Earl
Great stuff and he could possibly sneak in and steal the closer's role in San Diego.
G$ picking Alejandro de Aza as an honorable mention is pretty solid even if he is mediocre because I like the fact he could be leading off in a loaded Orioles lineup.
Worst - 18.9 Dilson Herrera - Chat
This is not a bad pick. I just know Mets fans want a new SS. It is the 18th round in a 14 team, 8 keeper league. At this point, the only bad picks are retired players and kids who spent their summer in Williamsport.
Round 19
Best - 19.4 Matt Shoemaker - Chat
I think this dude is for real. He pounds the bottom of the zone and has awesome control. I am not buying some projection systems calling for a big regression. Low 3.00 ERA again for Shoemaker.
Worst - 14.14 Wilmer Flores - Lou
Same logic as the last pick. Mets have a huge hole at SS. Not much upside, but Flores could at least see the field.
Round 20
Best - 20.4 Shane Victorino - Papz
Another Papz veteran that will always end up in my favorite pick column. It looks like the Flying Hawaiian could hold on to the starting RF job in Boston until he gets hurt singing the National Anthem on Opening Day.
Worst - The guys I do not know much about.
Round 21
Best - 21.14 Brandon League - Port
League seems to be the favorite for the interim closer's job in LA. Saves are saves and no one could ever complain about snagging 8 saves at this point of the draft.
Worst - 21.12 Everth Cabrera - Gyno
This is actually great pick if Cabrera gets picked up by a team, but he is the worst person in the round. DUI, DWI, and domestic violence under his belt. The good news is conduct issues are not a fantasy category or Sidney Ponson would have never been worth owning.
Round 22
Best - 22.13 Rubby de la Rosa - LE
He throws absolute gas, and I think his strikeout rate has to come up. Rubby may be need a little more seasoning, but I think he takes a couple steps forward back in the NL.
Worst - 22.10 Cory Luebke - Rick
He will need arm surgery before leaving the recovery room from his previous arm surgery.
Hope everyone liked this. It is fun to have to defend yourself when you show up as the "worst" pick. Of course, I have my own biases, so I could have had some shitty picks I did not realize.
Again, late round picks are not bad picks because there is minimal risk.

Fun reading all of that. I had one "best pick" and no "worst pick" so I'll take that.

I was going to take Smoak but 4 picks earlier, but Earl took him so I went with LoMo. I guess there was no escaping worst pick with either way.

I felt the same way looking at the teams toward the end of the draft. It looks to be one of the more competitive seasons... barring injuries of course.

Contract was just finalized today. Did not look at any baseball news.
Either way, great pick there and I hope he plays at 2B and does not cut into Hardy's playing time.
There were definitely a few rounds I could have went in a lot of different ways. I thought the most interesting thing was that I was not huge on a lot of picks by Clams, but he ranked really highly overall on Port's cursory rankings.

Easily the most competitive league year to year because of only 8 keepers. I think you can even rebuild in one year if you want to make a change and compete the next....but the all minor league approach doesn't make much sense.
Posted on 2/25/15 at 6:17 pm to cwill
Yeah there was only 2 or 3 teams out of the playoff race last season
Posted on 2/25/15 at 6:22 pm to cwill
I was worst two years ago. JewT bad. Then I was in the top 6 all last year and ended up getting passed by you by half a game. Clams and Chat were close too. We usually go 9-10 deep fighting for 6 spots.

This. I was awful last year with no draft picks. I think I should at least be competitive and fight for a playoff spot.

Can I change Port's worst pick to Josh Hamilton?
I was really rooting for that dude.
