So I had my fantasy draft this weekend and took Evans over Odell at 5th overall. Obviously the rest of the draft roasted me for my decision. Anybody else think Evans has a razor thin edge over Odell this year?

I wouldn't have roasted anyone for that decision. Screw consensus rankings. Tampa looks like they're ready to put up big numbers. I personally don't know if I would have done it, but it's not a stupid decision by any means.

I'd take Evans over any WR other than Antonio Brown.

It's a coin flip. Not worth roasting you over it

Yeah, both players are really close. It should shock no one if Evans ends up having a better year than Beckham.

I agree. I don't think there is a wrong decision between the two. But people get caught up in name recognition. They have been in the league the same amount of time and Evans actually outscored Odell in standard and ppr leagues last year. And give me Jameis over Eli at this point in their careers as well.

My only counter would be how Tampa is constructed this year. Watching Hard Knocks, Dirk seems to hammer home the fact that TB has the chance to be good on defense and how he wants Jameis to limit mistakes.

Perhaps with the addition of DJax and Howard, Evans gets fewer targets and Jameis is more conservative, kind of like Dak is/was with Dez (in terms of not force feeding).

That's a good arguement. But I can see desean helping Evans. He is going to open up the field between the 20s. Howard stealing red zone targets scares me more than Jackson. But if this preseason is any indication of what's to come this season then jameis still has a tendency to force it into Evans.

I doubt my theory stands up. I'm not worried about Jackson. He's never been a volume guy. Doubt he catches more than 50-60 passes.

Volume argument can be used for OBJ, too, with Marshall, the emergence of Sterling and addition of Evan Ingram.

Right

TB has been top 8 in rush attempts in Koetter's first two seasons.

In the first 4 weeks last season Winston threw the ball an average of 44 times, they went 1-4. That dipped to 32 times after they changed their philosophy to more run oriented and efficient. Check Evans first 8 games vs his last 8 (55/745/8 vs 41/576/4) Evans was huge on volume last year after losing ASF and VJax. Martin being hurt

Also, Evans turned in another sub 56% catch rate (3 straight years). TB made DJax highest paid WR in FA. A significant loss of volume will harm Evans. Drafted chris Godwin and OJ too

Then there is this, something Odell is miles ahead on

quote:

inability to create after the catch, where he has ranked 102nd/110, 101st/119, and 112nd/118 in PFF’s yards after catch per reception since entering the league

I would bet a significant amount of money Odell outpaces Evans this season

Odell's next gen stats have proven the last 3 seasons he is the most talented WR in football, even with Eli being garbage.

Can't argue with any of that. I agree Odell will have more catches and probably more yards but I think Evans bridges the gap with more TDs. And I get all the next gen stats, but even with all that being in Odell's favor Evans still managed to score more points than him. Albeit just a few points. I also think Winston makes a jump this year as far as efficiency is concerned

Julio went 4th. Would have gone Odell and Evans over Julio this year. Splitting hairs I know but I hate having my first round pick on the injury report every week.

I have no problem with Julio behind the other 3. Seems like he has a foot issue every season.

It's hard to split hairs w these studs, but if Evans losing 30-40 targets at a 55% catch rate, you're talking double digit TDs if he wants to sniff Odell

Of course he can post double digits bc he's a stud. But I don't want a heavy TD dependent guy as my first pick

A lot will hinge on Winston - accuracy, volume, how he favors his new targets

I know it's hard to pass on a talent like Evans, I just personally have him at the back of the high end WRs

Yea Odell is probably the concensus safest wr pick after brown. I should probably draft more chalk then I usually do. But something about taking a chance on a player a round or 2 early and proving the experts wrong just does it for me lol

Saw that on Sports Center. I have to think that was some sort of joke or something. No way he would jeopardize his career like that. I hope not at least.
