Yahoo Story

For the past few years I've always been one of those guys that have waited for my QB. Went with the method of stocking up on WR's on RB's, like everyone else in my league. After reading this article, it dawned on me that I'm doing it all wrong. The last time I won the Ship was back in 2010 and I had Aaron Rodgers as my QB. Since then the best QB I've had was Stafford, and that was a few years back. Up until this morning I was planning on going either RB or WR in round 1, without a doubt. Going to work a few mocks picking a QB in round 1 or 2 and see how it plays out.

What's the boards opinion of going with a QB early, rather than waiting until the 5th round or later to grab one?

In mocks I've been trying QB in the late 2nd/early 3rd, grabbing either brees or Rodgers, and I've liked how my teams turn out.

I'm the same as you. Two years ago I made the finals with Tom Brady, then last season I tried to get cute by waiting and getting Kaepernick late. Inconsistent QB play ruined my season.

That being said, I think there's a lot of value in getting Stafford in the 4th/5th this season.

Stafford will be gone by the end of the 3rd in most leagues. Won't be there in the 5th for sure.

These guys have gone in the first round the last few years in all my leagues. Once the top few RBs are off the board, someone usually goes QB.

The only QB I've consistently seen go in the 1st is Manning. At least in a standard 10-team mock.

My first eight selections: (12-team, PPR, from No. 5 spot): Montee Ball (RB1), Peyton (QB1), Antonio Brown (WR1), Shane Vereen (RB2), Jordan Cameron (TE1), Kendall Wright (WR2), Brandin Cooks (WR3) and Bernard Pierce (FLEX). Not too shabby. Once a wait-on-a-QB advocate, I’m now officially a convert.

Drafted Monte Ball #5 overall? frick this guy

I'm not against going QB early, but the team he drafted sure as hell isn't an argument for the strategy

Like the entire draft process, it depends on what QB is there when you pick. If Peyton or Drew isn't there, I'd probably wait a few more rounds and get a 2nd tier QB.

I definitely agree. I thought his team was terrible, lol. I just did one going with a QB early. I picked 7th overall in a 12 team draft, non PPR. Here's how it turned out in round order:

WR - Calvin Johnson
WR - Brandon Marshall
QB - Matthew Stafford
RB - Toby Gerhart
RB - Frank Gore
TE - Vernon Davis
WR - Terrance Williams
RB - Darren McFadden
WR - Kendall Wright
RB - Tre Mason
WR - Kelvin Benjamin
QB - Andy Dalton
RB - Carlos Hyde
K - Justin Tucker
DST - Saints

ETA: I've done 11 mocks so far, and this draft got calculated for 98.6 points per week. That's the best one so far I've done. Standard scoring.

Depends on the scoring system, if you get 6pts for a passing TD you can ride an elite QB all year. That being said I used to intentionally not draft QBs early and did well with that strategy too. The key is to not fall in love with targeting specific positions in certain rounds you'll miss out on great value.

I don't know - I won two leagues last year. One I had Cam and Wilson, the other I had Luck. Came in 2nd in another with Wilson. I beat a team with Manning in one league, but I don't think the Manning team was a factor in the other two.

I did a 10 team mock, 6th spot, went in order - Graham, Manning, Ellington, Stacy, Jennings, HIlton, Sanders, G. Tate, T. Williams, Pierce, Khiry, Hill, Jordan Matthews.

It's not bad, but you give up a lot to have Graham and Manning.

Usually it's a 12-team PPR league with 6 point passing TDs.

Any strategy can work if you draft well in the mid to late rounds, and are good on the waiver wire.

I won 2 leagues last year too.
There are lots of way to win a league.

You can always find great WRs late. Desean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Josh Gordon all were WRs that could be had 5th rd or later last year. Winning leagues comes down to whether you drafted those types of players vs a Mike Wallace or Torrey Smith. And there will always be FA RBs that put up huge numbers.

Did you have a top round QB in either? Just curious.

Ultimately, you just need to hit at as many positions as possible, whether via draft or waivers or trades.

Bust rate refers to players drafted within a tier (e.g. RB1, RB2, QB1, QB2, etc.) that failed to finish top-15 (for QB1/RB1) or top-28 (QB2/RB2) in fantasy points per game.

if ar, brees, PM...dont finish in the top 3, then they were abust
