Had no defensive options this week so I picked up Eagles at home against Giants.

I am down by one with Jordan Matthews and Eagles DST. (PPR)

Would you bench your defense entirely to avoid the possibility of getting negative points or would that be a dumb move. My luck i'd do that and Matthews get hurt.

Do points ever matter like tie breaker? If so I'd never bench anyone.

I've seen someone bench a kicker who got 12 pts and he missed the playoffs by 6 pts.

In my league total points is the tie breaker in the standings. I wouldn't bench anyone. Negative points are generally pretty unlikely.

i did this once last year

but my opponent didnt have any more players going and all i had was my defense left to play on monday night

I was up by 3 so I benched my D just to be safe

they ended up scoring like 9 points, but in that situation where you are already ahead by a close margin, and you know the other guy cant score any more points, at that point a Defense may be a liability

but thats really the only time i would think to do it

This I don't get. There are no negative points in real football. How do you get negative points in fantasy football? I guess skill players can accumulate negative yardage and fumbles lost and interceptions--I get that. But if the D allows a bunch of points to the opposing team, I don't see the need to generate negative points for D. Am I an outlier on this subject?

I feel ya

My biggest beef though is when the defense gets punished for an INT return for a TD that the offense committed

They don't in most leagues. Pts against only counts when the offense scores on your defense. An pick 6 generally doesn't count on your pts against.

Why would someone ever bench a kicker?

they do in ours for some reason

i shouldve gotten a point for the Broncos Defense only allowing 17 points to the Browns (they finished with 23, 6 of which was a Dansby pick 6) but i did not

but i have the broncos Defense, so its hard to complain about much of anything when it comes to them

still averaging 18 a game

I believe so, every league I have been in or helped a friend with had negative points for defenses. The websites default to negative points for defenses that give up 40+ points; so I would think it's pretty standard.

I understand what you are saying, but I disagree with your thought. I think a defense should be penalized for giving up a ton of yards or a lot of points. If not, the only defenses that would matter would be the ones that hold teams under 21, get a ton of sacks, TOs, or TDs. Just about every other defense would be equal to each other since giving up 30+ points appears standard.

IMO, the only way to get around this is to go to drafting defensive players.

This is another rule that gets argued a lot. The best argument for this was once the other team has possession of the ball, that offense is viewed as the defense. I don't like the argument and believe this is done for simplicity.

Perfect example, would be the LSU game when White muffed the punt. Should LSU's defense (if you played college fantasy) she penalized for giving up the TD when Florida was able to start at the 13? And, what if they held them to no gain and UF was able to kick a FG, why should that count against the Defense. So, rather than trying to decipher which points count against a defense, the league just holds them accountable for all scores (instant gratification) so we can keep up with our current standings.
