I was invited to join a fantasy baseball league this season. I don’t remember the last time that I even played fantasy baseball, so I was hoping some of you savvy veterans could give me some advice on my roster. What areas do I need to try to improve upon? What position do I have a surplus at, if any? Of the surplus position, which players would you try to trade and for what other position? Which positions are weighted more heavily? I’ve noticed most of the waivers that have processed so far, have mostly been relief pitching.

Here are my league settings and scoring categories:
Max Teams: 8
Scoring Type: Head-to-Head
Max Acquisitions per Week: 6
Min Innings Pitched: 1
Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL
Batters Stat Categories: Runs (R), Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), Stolen Bases (SB), Batting Average (AVG)
Pitchers Stat Categories: Wins (W), Saves (SV), Strikeouts (K), Earned Run Average (ERA), (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched (WHIP)

Here is my roster:
Jonathan Lucroy Mil - C,1B
Edwin Encarnación Tor - 1B
Dustin Pedroia Bos - 2B
David Wright NYM - 3B
José Reyes Tor - SS
Mike Trout LAA - OF
Bryce Harper Was - OF
Yoenis Céspedes Det - OF
Freddie Freeman Atl - 1B
Víctor Martínez Det - 1B
Marcell Ozuna Mia - OF
Kris Bryant ChC - 3B
Matt Wieters Bal - C
Javier Báez ChC - 2B,SS

David Price Det - SP
Corey Kluber Cle - SP
Trevor Rosenthal StL - RP
Drew Storen Was - RP
Masahiro Tanaka NYY - SP
Justin Verlander Det – SP
Doug Fister Was - SP
Michael Wacha StL - SP
José Fernández Mia - SP

I like to target hitters with lots of power and pitchers with big strikeout potential. In an eight team league, you are probably fine to stick with what you have and just use the waivers for any glaring holes at this point. Maybe go for a third closer. There is probably no point in rostering Jose Fernandez in a shallow league.

Is he not likely to be back from injury yet? Not going to lie, I haven't flowed baseball as close as I do football.

So ditch Fernandez and try to pick up a quality reliever. Thanks man. I appreciate the information. Good luck in your leagues.

I think it is like June as his return date. He will not be ready for a couple months. Honestly, you could probably trade him away for Brett Cecil or something. I would try to trade before I drop.

I am not sure how much I trust Pedroia and Wright. They are fine, but kind of weak for an 8 teamer. I would tried to get one of Arenado Or Seager at 3B.

Just wait and put Fernandez on the DL. Then add a player

Limited roster moves per week would drive me crazy.
