LSU, Alvin Roy, and the Evolution of Sports Training

Came across this article while doing some research for a client. Thought it was a great read because I didn't know the University and Profession that i love so much were so intertwined. It's a bit lengthy but i think it can be enjoyed by anyone, not just "fitness gurus" Trust me, you'll enjoy it

Al Roy: Mythbreaker

Ya'll LSU fanatics will really enjoy the telling of how the 1958 NC team became the 1958 NC team!!! well at least that's part of the reason.....most?!?!

re: LSU, Alvin Roy, and the Evolution of Sports Training

As I told Bud Johnson, Istrouma teams even in the late 40's were going to Alvin Roys to work out three times a week.

My father was on the 47-48-49 teams and made 1st team all city in 1949.

Alvin as everyone knows brought the first weight set to Istrouma in 1954, but that is long after his work with the Istrouma teams in the summers of 1948-53.

My Uncle played on the Istrouma teams with Billy Cannon.

What a great story! I remember as a kid seeing Alvin Roy on TV - I think he had a show if I remember correctly - but of course I didn't know any of the stuff in that story. Man, he was three-for-three, huh?

Thanks for posting that.

I am not going to read the link, but do remember my father who played high school football in the 1940s and other guys of his generation swear against any sort of training other than running and agility drills. Alvin Roy proved them all wrong when he increased Billy Cannon's weight and speed between seasons.

Billy Cannon lived on Bartlett St. and Alvin's place was just down the Street on Chactow Dr., in the third build to the east from Bartlett street.

See how close Alvin's place was to Istrouma, and Little Fuzz had the players go to his place and workout in thier free time in the summer.

Istrouma High was probably the first football team EVER to have a weight training program.

As a kid I went to Alvin Roy's a few times with my Dad, who had gone to Istrouma. I met Billy Cannon and Johnny Robinson there.
In high school, I went to school with Mr. Roy's daughters, Astrid and Gina. I went out with Gina a couple of times (she was too nice to tell me no!. I got to meet Mr. Roy. I will never forget, their kitchen had a huge long counter/bar that opened into the living room. Half of it was covered by about 60-70 bottles of vitamins, mineral tablets and every other kind of diet supplement at the time (late 60's). The other half was covered in liquor bottles, every thing you could imagine.
They were great people and extremely nice, and both daughters were gorgeous.

re: LSU, Alvin Roy, and the Evolution of Sports Training

I came home to print this article out yesterday for a friend to read at the gym. when i went back to the gym, my friend was sitting in my office with and elderly lady that i recognized. she's been coming to the gym for a couple years. They must have gotten to talking about the article while i was gone. He tells me to ask her what her last name is, and she says, "Roy". She was his sister in law!!! Freakin serendipity!!! Crazy how shite happens like that!!! 2 days ago i had no idea the influence this man had on my profession and my own career, then i'm sitting in my office, listening to her tell stories about all this!!!
