Not really news given the fact that we have zero centers on our roster and he was the only one that played that spot in preseason.

I definitely see a center getting drafted and it's still possible we bring in a stopgap like Goodwin after we get to camp and see what Lelito and the rookie look like.

Right, so he'll have some competition, which you want. Question is will it be veteran competition, a draftee or both.

I agree, I really would like to see them bring back Goodie at vet minimum rather then resigning DLP.

Yeah, I really don't want dlp back. Not that he's bad, but he's hit his ceiling, and I've seen enough.

Lelito and a center in the draft should be just fine, and fix our problem IMO.

If you think abt it this is the same situation with the DLP. He was a nobody and given the starting job after JGoody left and he did well, so id say he can do it.

I think a lot of the inconsistency with the line had a lot to do with the guards making up for DLP playing like shite though.

The majority of the inconsistency was rooted in the players switching to a new blocking scheme. It's not easy replacing one of the best O line coaches in the NFL. Nor is it easy for linemen to learn new blocking schemes. Hopefully they straightened out the problems for next year

re: Tim Lelito Our New Starting Center?

We were trying integrate more zone blocking schemes, which while effective, it does require more athleticism out of your linemen. we have that to a degree, but they're much more acclimated to power running, man blocking concepts.

We trimmed down our zone running to more inside zone running, and brought back more power running as the year progressed. We were pretty bad at the outside stretch play.

Wasn't Evans not 100% those first few games though? I can't remember what he had injured but Lelito took his place in the Arizona game.

Lelito had to block Darnell Dockett most of the time.

Lelito also rolled his ankle early in that game, but he played through it.

I'm hoping for one of two things to happen. Either the players improve for the scheme. Or they switch to a scheme that is better for our players ability.

re: Tim Lelito Our New Starting Center?

didn't Lelito aalso play a bunch in the 2nd Falcons game?

the Thursday nighter.

I thought I remember reading on here that he was given the game ball.

was Evans hurt then too? or was Lelito playing some at center?

i watched most of that game at a neighborhood bar down the street from my house but I swear I remember something about Lelito and a game ball afterwards.

Lelito started in place of Evans on a short week against the Falcons, and he did a fine job. He did receive the game ball.

It's not a matter of can he physically do it, but can he make all the line calls.

woh, woh, WOH!you are totally leaving out the center that was going to be the missing piece we needed to get back to the superbowl:

Olin Kreutz

Seriously though, I remember this board going way overboard with excitement when we signed him and it fizzled so painfully and quickly.

okay.

see, i think they were even talking that up on the radio some too. on gamedays, the local radio station carries WWL's coverage of the Saints. I think I heard about on there first and then came on here and saw a thread about it.

if the Saints draft a center, Lelito could compete with that guy and if loses that battle at least he could back up Grubbs and Evans. Shit, as we've said, he had to step in a few times for Evans this past season.

Absolutely let him compete, it can't hurt. However if I was the Saints, I'd probably look at drafting Marcus Martin (USC) or Weston Richburg (Colorado State) in the 2nd round. I think both will be high impact players and solid fixtures for years to come at the C position.

given shot to earn Saints’ starting job

usual coachspeak, of course he'll get a shot. His shot to compete might be against a 2nd to 6th Rd pick tho. I count three centers probably 2nd to 4th Rd I would say win the starting job hands down. 3rd to 5th Rd there's another couple that could be better.

There has to be someone else imported that can play the position just for depth. If I was GM-ing I'd target a high end center in the draft that has the capability to slide over to guard in a couple of years.
