I wouldn't mind seeing three 12 team playoff brackets. One playing for a gold trophy, the other for a silver, and another for a bronze. This way, every conference winner, even the smaller ones get a chance to upset big name teams.

Would enjoy. Good idea

They are nothing like a preseason game. Preseason is nothing but a practice, starters play the full games in bowls.

starters play the full game, but the competition, for the most part is terrible. attendance is terrible, atmosphere is terrible. the fact that ull vs tulane will be one of the best attended bowls really tells you all you need to know about how terrible the bowl system is.

No. However they need to trim the total #.

35 bowls is insanity.

Make your own bowl pickem 10-100$ contest with your friends every year and you will start watching the bowls a bit different. And once you start really watching the games you find that even the no name team games sometimes have exciting games that will get you going.

I enjoy bowl season.
I don't watch every snap of every game but I try to watch much as I can.

With that said, for me if LSU isn't playing for NC I'm not spending money to watch.
I have a badass tv.

I will admit that New Year's eve and day are fricking awesome, but for schools to have to send back almost a 3rd of their allotment tells you something. Most people just want to watch on tv, but if people aren't attending what is the future? There is also worry about fans attending the semi-final and final games of the playoff because some may not be able to do both.

re: Is it time to get rid of Bowl Games?

The era of the bowl game is over IMO. They have diluted the pool so much that bowl games mean nothing these days except for mid majors who will never have a shot at a major bowl or a NC.

The fans have spoken with the low number of tickets sold. Nobody wants to travel during the holidays to see a mediocre game with basically zero implications. Think about SEC fans. As an LSU alum, we've played a potential National Championship team, the National Champion 3 of the past 4 years, and the reigning Heisman trophy winner all in the same year. Why the hell would I spend the money to travel to Tampa during the Holidays to watch us play Iowa??

This rings true for almost every major program, and smaller programs simply do not have the fan base to make a good appearance. Maybe 3 or 4 bowls a year have truly intriguing match-ups. Back in the day when there was only a few bowls, they were all intriguing match-ups.

The upcoming playoff will further make the bowl game obsolete when the country watches how entertaining a playoff will be for College football, and it will only expand from here on out.

I personally don't care. I will watch 2 games. LSU and the bcs title game. I only watched one last year, LSU. I really don't care about any other team and am not going to sit through 3 hours of 2 teams from up north or out west.

Is it time to get rid of Bowl Games? quote: Is it time to get rid of Bowl Games? Not all of them... But back in the day when MICH played Ohio St. and the loser went home it meant more... They had like 15 bowls and REAL teams made them.. It was a shame that a 10-1 Mich team had to sit at home and watch the Rose bowl.... Football was MUCH better back then.... AND all the new years games were where they should be... On NEW YEARS DAY.............

Define real team. I grew up in 80/90s and football is tenfold better. Faster, more dynamic, more violence and talent. And guess what loser of Ohio st michigan still goes home, and this year the winner also goes home so I guess you should be happier

re: Is it time to get rid of Bowl Games?

here's my thing... the conference tie-ins have ruined the small bowls...

after the BCS and the new years day bowls have their teams, instead of the small bowls locked into certain conferences, they should have more at-larges to make logical matchups like Tulane-ULL in New Orleans, or at worst have one regional team in every small bowl... for example, Independence Bowl in Shreveport should have Tech, ULM, Dallas area teams, Arkansas teams, Oklahoma teams, etc., even a powerhouse from one of those states when they go like 6-6
