Obamacare Forces College To Drop Student Healthcare

Oh the irony

I think the bigger question is why a public university is offering students healthcare insurance.

Is this normal?

re: Obamacare Forces College To Drop Student Healthcare
If I read the story correctly, they offered students healthcare for $50 a semester before obamacare. But now that sane coverage would go up to $800 or $900 per semester so they're just dropping it.

Many have requirements that students have health insurance, either from their parents, some other outside source or you can buy it from the school.

In my experience yes. Both LSU and LSUHSC have plans offered through BCBS that are for students. In general it's a healthy population group, so premiums were decent for the amount of coverage... Well were anyway.

GT required that I have health insurance when I was a graduate student there. Either through the school or on my own

It was normal for me. I bought the LSU version of health insurance when I was there. I used it twice in 5 years. Once for a severely sprained ankle I got while playing basketball in the field house and another time for strep throat.

When I was in grad school at the State University of Mississippi 15 years agp, I paid $98 for a semester, $60 for summer. Basically $20-$25 a month.

ETA: Just checked, its $530 per semester currently.

I was LSU between '85 and '90. If I remember correctly I believe the health plan was like $40 a semester.

Now imagine being a student and they're telling your your insurance will cost you $900 per semester. Would you have been able to afford that? If not, what would you have done about that ankle issue and case of strep? Want to guess how much a trip to the emergency room with an ankle injury would cost you out of pocket?

Yes. LSU does the same. A college has a large number of low risk adults, health insurance is cheap and easy to implement. At LSU, students can get the same plan as faculty.

Plus they have a health center that can handle smaller/routine medical needs. The big universities have medical schools as well.

Back in the 90s LSU's student insurance cost about $500 for an academic year. It was shitty insurance with a $50,000 lifetime limit, one car wreck away from bankruptcy. I know because I paid it for six years, So I call bull shite on this story.

If you want to call bullshite, you need to provide something to back that up other than your own bull shite.

Now up to $1237 a year, same company, same shitty coverage. All students are also required to pay a fee each semester for use of the Student Health Center. More than likely someone has confused this fee with actual insurance.

Under age 30 can get catastrophic insurance through the exchange.

And since students make no money, it should be close to free insurance.

re: Obamacare Forces College To Drop Student Healthcare
1200$ a year is not that expensive and it isn't shitty coverage. The 50k limit you mentioned is per illness, not lifetime. In your terrible example of a cat wreck, auto insurance pays the hospital bills.
